Bear
I waited until Rachel fell asleep, then called Horse, keeping my voice low.
"Hey, can you go and get my laptop from the shop. I'm taking today for paperwork."
"Where will you be?"
"Hospital." I gave him Rachel's room number.
"You admitted yourself?" Horse sounded strained.
"No, I'm here with Rachel. She's admitted."
"Jesus! talk about giving me a heart attack. Information, Bear, sometimes it helps!"
"Are you worried about me?" I chuckled
"What do you think? I don't know what that fucking war was like. I can only assume..." I heard him bite his tongue, he sighed. " I'll get your laptop, Bear. Just tell me what I say to Maz."
"Nothing, don't say anything."
"You know that's not going to work." Horse warned.
I sighed, looking down at the woman in my arms.
"It's going to have to, Horse."
"Ok," he said, dubiously. "I'll get it for you. I'm probably the only one who can dodge her questions anyway. See you soon."
I hung up and put away my phone in a pocket. I shifted Rachel to a more comfortable position with her head against my neck. Her breath tickled my beard as she whispered my name.Horse
Maz gave me the evil eye as I pushed the door open. She'd tied her button down work shirt up into a front knot so it revealed a bit of her stomach.
"What are you doing here?" She sneered.
"Just picking something up." I said, starting up the stairs to Bears apartment.
"He's not up yet." She shouted up at me. I kept going.
"How do you know?" I yelled back over my shoulder as I reached the door. I heard her yell of frustration.I chuckled, she thought she knew everything about him, but she generally missed a lot. Like the fact that he never looked at the townies that were flashing themselves at his brothers. He was the wingman. The one who took the shy girls and danced with them, entertained them so they didn't feel left out while their friends were getting their rocks off. And his control was tight. He wasn't swayed by anything the girls threw at him. And they threw everything.
I tried to tell Maz, but at usual, in her older sister way, she believed she knew best. So short shorts and tight shirts were her uniform. The other guys appreciated it at least.
I grabbed the laptop bag, checked it was in there, and headed out the door. Bear was right to get me to do it. I'd annoyed her enough that she ignored me right up until I started up my bike, and roared off.
I walked into the hospital and asked for directions to the correct ward. I was about to reach for the handle to the room when a firm grip stopped me.
"No men." A nurse snapped at me quietly.
"I'm dropping off Bears laptop. He didn't want to leave."I replied. She sighed.
"Thank God. She barely sleep all night and then..." She clasped her mouth shut, then blurted. "Are you a safe male to her?"
I stared at her. Safe male? What the fuck is that? This is a free book available through Wattpad (c) LTM1986. If you are not reading this on Wattpad, it had been stolen. She sighed and shook her head.
"Katie, just take in what he's dropping off. Don't fuss." Someone called from the nurses station. I handed over the laptop and watched the woman go in. I glimpsed through the curtain, Bear in bed, with the Henderson girl in his arms. He didn't even let go of her to take the laptop. It went on the over bed table along with some flowers and books.I saw him move his head to gaze at her. He was hers. Totally and utterly hers. The nurse lifted the blankets to check on the girl, and went white.
Bear
A skill that's never left me is the ability to nap anywhere. I opened my eyes to see a nurse come in with my laptop. Horse was quick.
"Someone just dropped this off for you." The nurse said.
"Thanks,"I smiled," can you put it on the table?"
"Sure, do you mind if I check her discharge while I'm here?"
The nurse put my laptop down, and then to the side to lift up the blanket.
Her face went white as she looked at the absorbent mat Rachel was lying on.
"Can you please lie her flat. And see if you can wake her."
She rushed to hit an alarm.
"What's going on?" I demanded.
"She's losing too much blood." The nurse panicked.
Rachel didn't move at either of our shouts. I shook her gently.
"Rachel, sweet pea, wake up please?"
A male doctor came into the room.
"Sorry he's the only one I could find."
A nurse yelled from the door.
"I don't think it matters." The one in the room replied, then rattled off medical details. The doctor looked at me and snapped.
"Sir, your girlfriend is bleeding out of her uterus. We don't know why, but we have a suspicion based on things she's said that it might be an incomplete miscarriage. Can you tell me when the last period she had was?"
I gaped and the hairs on the back of my neck raised. I tried to calculate how long ago her father had died.
"Probably a month and a half ago." I replied.
The doctor frowned, and motioned to the nurse.
"See if there's an operating room free. I want to see why she's bleeding and do a D&C."
He looked up at me, " I'll need you to sign the consent forms."
A female doctor came running in, and caught the last part of the conversation. She looked up at me.
"If she has any remnants still inside her, this will get rid of them and let her heal. And it'll help us work out why she's bleeding." She explained.I looked at the woman in my arms. She was still unconscious. I nodded and she was pulled from my arms onto a stretcher that had somehow appeared. Her IV was detached and reattached, the whole team working with efficency.
"Hey, Bear... its OK, they're looking after her." Horse clamped my arm as I reached after the team rushing my Sweet Pea away. "She'll be fine."
"Don't lie to me, Horse."
"But it's such a good lie."
