Rachel.
I heard beeping, and quiet voices around me.
"Her heart rate is good, and blood pressure is coming up. I think she's waking up."
I groaned.
"It's OK Miss Henderson, you're still in hospital, but you gave us a bit of a scare. How are you feeling?"
How did I feel? Cold. Like I couldn't get warm. Nauseous. Pain.
"There's someone outside who is very worried about you. Do you mind if we bring him in?"
"Bear?" I mouthed
"That's him."
"Please?" I started crying. I needed him. I needed my safe place.
"Hey Sweet pea, I'm here."
I felt his arms beside me, and his beard tickled me as he kissed me. And his warmth. His blessed warmth that soothed the aches and troubles out of me.
"Bear."
"It's alright, I'm here. You're safe. It's over. "
I'm safe, I'm finally safe.Horse
I sat with Bear for the hour it took them to take her from her room to when they took him into the recovery room. It was a scary hour. He appeared to be OK. He was quiet, and settled. But there was an alertness about him. An aura. I'd seen glimpses of it before.
"They said she could have had an incomplete miscarriage." He announced at one stage. I swallowed, remembering the time where Daisy was frustrated at the farm and Midwife and I having to jump on him.
"You can't dig him up. Jefferson said he put him as close to hell as he could." I replied. Bear gave one nod. That was it. We sat and breathed for a while. My leg was jittery, and I got up and paced.
Bear sat and stared into space.
"You're being scary, man." I complained. He turned his whole head to me and looked through me.
"Jesus," I said, as a shudder ran through me. If this is what our enemies saw, then I'm glad I'm on our side.
"That's what they said too." Bear announced and looked away.
"Who?"
Bear twitched his lips.
"The devil and his demons." He looked back at me and winked. I rolled my eyes and flopped down in the seat next to him.
"I'll go and grab some clothes for her. I'll ask Daisy what she'd need, seeing as she's the one who has seen her and would know her size. It'd be nice for her to be in something clean... and she'll need you with her." I announced.
Bear swallowed, then nodded.
"Thanks man, I'll owe you." He mumbled. I snorted.
"Damn straight you will. You're going to break my sisters heart."
Bear looked at me, still scary. He pulled an face.
"Nope I don't see it." He said, "She flirts with everyone. Nothing special about me. "
They called him in then, and he shot up and strode into the recovery ward like he owned the joint.
"She only means it with you." I told his back quietly. I'd told her many times of his disinterest, and she had the same reaction.I went shopping, I got several long pyjamas, and a pack of cotton underwear on Daisy's recommendation. I'd leave it to Bear to do the bra shopping. But this would be enough to get her through to discharge out of hospital, maybe. I dropped it off at the reception and then went and started my own work maintaining and redesigning websites for the day. A whim took me out to the farm after work.
I found Jefferson there, topping up the water for the animals. The chickens were still fluffed up, but fed. And the big momma pig was happy in her new pen.
"This place needs a dog." I muttered to the old man.
"It had one, he was mean and nasty and you guys made me bury him." He snarled at me.
"Now, now, " I responded, "don't insult canines by comparing him with them."
Jefferson barked one laugh.
"You're good. They'll say you lot are evil. But not from what I've seen."
"Evil is just someone's perspective."
He squinted at my response.
"Wise too." He nodded, "I'll be back tomorrow."I sent Bear a text letting him know Jefferson was keeping an eye on the place. He sent a thumbs up back. Then I started the bike and headed home. I hadn't really had time to check on Momma today. This is a free book available through Wattpad (c) LTM1986. If you are not reading this on Wattpad, it had been stolen.
Maz was in a foul mood.
"What got you all grumpy this time?" I asked as I watched Maz stomp off up the stairs.
"Apparently Brian didn't come down to work with her today, he just kept sending her emails." Momma said as she sliced up the carrots for dinner.
"So she's overreacting."
I watched as Momma's hands started shaking again.
"Have you been overdoing it again, Momma." I said gently, taking the knife from her hands and taking over the dinner preparations. She sighed.
"Is just tremors, Jason. Nothing worse than that." She objected, but sat down to rest.
"Which get worse when you do too much, Momma." I replied.
"I'm worried about Marilyn, Jason. She's been after Brian for four years, and he's obviously not interested. But she's not giving up. How do we break it to her?"
I finished with various and moved onto the rest of the Vegetables.
"Momma, I don't think it will be a problem soon." I told her
"Jason, he's not going to fall in love with her in the next few days, not if he's avoiding her."
I tipped the vegetables into the pot with the meat.
"Momma," I took her hand and smiled. "Keep this to yourself, but I think Bear had found his Ol'Lady. He just needs to realise it, and then convince her to accept him."
"Really? What's she like?" Mom loved the gossip, and picked it up like a sponge. Unlike her daughter though, Momma was where gossip came to die.
"She's beautiful, Momma. He can't keep his eyes off her. She's got bright red hair just like Dylan."
"She'd keep herself covered up in the sun then."
"Definitely."
"I'm glad. Brian deserves happiness." Momma sighed.
Yes, yes he does.
