i settle into the kayak, my back pressed against the cool plastic as i trail behind claire. her laughter dances in the breeze, light and carefree. but there's a tightness in my chest that i still can't seem to shake. i've kept this from her—about billie, about everything—and the weight of it feels like it might literally drown me if i'm not careful. billie is right next door, her presence is like a secret i'm desperate to share but too afraid to reveal. claire, who has no idea that i've been exchanging texts with billie, would absolutely lose it if she knew. the thought alone makes my stomach twist into knots.
