“Don't get too close
It's dark inside
It's where my demons hide”

"Be careful, extra careful," Nyx whispered, her voice trembling slightly as she wrapped her arms around me. Her embrace was tight, almost desperate, as if she was trying to pour every ounce of her strength into me. "Don’t get hurt. Come back to me in one piece, okay?"

"Yes, Love, I’ll be back to you, in one piece," I reassured her, my voice soft but firm. I needed her to believe it as much as I did.

"Without any scratches," she added, her voice a mix of fear and determination.

"Without any scratches," I repeated, trying to ease the worry in her eyes.

I felt the warmth of her body slowly begin to fade as she hesitated, then finally pulled away. I could already feel a chill settle in, like a part of me was missing. Her warmth was my anchor, my reason to keep fighting. The instant we separated, I found myself already longing for the comfort of her touch again, the soft rhythm of her heartbeat that always seemed to calm the storm inside me. My heart started to race, the thought of leaving her making me feel more vulnerable than I’d like to admit.

Our eyes locked, and I could see the unspoken words flickering in the depths of her gaze. She wanted to say more—I could feel it—but something held her back. I silently urged her to let it out. Please, say it, I pleaded in my mind.

My life had been a series of daunting paths—glares, disappointments, and endless darkness. It had been hollow, a never-ending struggle to survive. But now, standing here with Nyx, it wasn’t like that anymore. For the first time, I’d learned what it felt like to truly breathe, to find something worth holding on to. I had dodged fear for so long, but now it had caught up with me. Yet, in its grasp, I realized that the best things in life come with risks. And I was willing to face those risks, if it meant keeping the one good thing in my life safe.

"I’ll be back, it’s just a meeting," I said, my hand gently caressing her hair, the silky strands slipping through my fingers. Her presence grounded me, gave me the strength I needed to face whatever lay ahead.

Nyx nodded, biting her lip—a habit she had whenever she was trying to hold back tears. "Just be careful," she repeated, her voice barely above a whisper. "I don’t have a good feeling about all this. Ever since the code black was launched, I’ve had this bad feeling. I know I shouldn’t, but I can’t help it."

There was a raw, unfiltered emotion in her words, a fear she couldn’t quite shake. I could see the turmoil in her eyes, the battle between wanting to be strong and the fear of losing me to the shadows that had once consumed my life.

"I understand, I do," I whispered back, pressing my forehead gently against hers. "And when I said I’ll always come back to you, I meant it. I’ll do whatever it takes to come back to you, okay?"

She closed her eyes, a single tear slipping down her cheek, and nodded again, this time more resolutely. Her hands tightened around my shirt, as if trying to hold on to a piece of me that she could keep close, no matter how far I had to go.

"I believe you," she finally said, her voice steady, but the worry still lingered in her eyes. "Just… please don’t make me wait too long."

"I won’t," I promised, sealing the vow with a kiss on her forehead. The gesture was soft, tender, a silent assurance that I would fight through hell itself to return to her. As I pulled away, I could still feel the warmth of her skin against my lips, a reminder of what I had to come back to.
