I'm not afraid (I'm not afraid)
To take a stand (to take a stand)
Everybody (everybody)
Come take my hand come (come take my hand)
We'll walk this road together, through the storm
. . .
In the quiet sanctuary of my study, Hunter approached me with a heavy heart. His steps echoed softly on the polished wooden floor, the weight of his turmoil palpable in every movement. I looked up from the maps spread before me, the strategies and plans suddenly feeling distant as I focused on the man who stood before me, burdened by guilt and uncertainty.
"Zayn, can we talk?" Hunter's voice was tentative, the words laden with unspoken emotions.
I nodded, gesturing for him to take a seat in the plush armchair nearby. "Of course, Hunter," I replied, my tone gentle yet firm. "Sit down. What's troubling you?"
He sank into the chair heavily, his shoulders slumping as if the weight of the world rested upon them. For a moment, there was silence, the only sound the faint ticking of the antique clock on the mantelpiece. Hunter struggled to find the right words, his gaze fixed on the intricate patterns of the carpet beneath his feet.
"It's Roman. . . everything he's doing, it's because of me," Hunter began, his voice strained with emotion. "He's my father, and I can't seem to stop him from hurting you and everyone else."
I listened intently, my heart going out to him. Hunter had made his choice, aligning himself with me against his own blood. The conflict between loyalty and family was a battle I knew all too well.
"You're not responsible for Roman's actions," I reassured him, my voice steady despite the gravity of our conversation. "You chose to stand with me, to oppose him. That takes courage, Hunter. Never doubt the strength of your conviction."
Hunter looked down, his hands clenched tightly in his lap. His next words came out in a rush, filled with anguish and confusion.
"Skylar... she's caught in the middle of all this," he continued, his voice trembling slightly. "She loves Roman as her father, and now she's torn between her loyalty to him and what's right."
I nodded slowly, understanding the complexity of Hunter's predicament.
"Skylar has her own journey to navigate. You can support her, but ultimately, she must find her own path through this storm."
Hunter sighed heavily, his frustration evident in every line of his face.
"I feel like I've failed everyone—Skylar, you, even myself," Hunter admitted, his voice tinged with self-doubt.
I leaned forward, my gaze unwavering as I met his troubled eyes with empathy and resolve.
"You haven't failed anyone, Hunter," I insisted firmly. "We're in the midst of a war, and wars are messy. What matters is how we stand together and face these challenges."
Hunter looked up at me, his eyes searching mine for reassurance and guidance.
"What if I can't protect everyone I care about?" Hunter asked quietly, his voice barely above a whisper.
I placed a reassuring hand on his arm, offering what comfort I could in the face of uncertainty.
"You're doing everything you can, Hunter," I assured him, my voice filled with quiet determination. "We're a team, you and me. Brothers. We watch each other's backs. That's how we'll get through this."
