Andrew's cries resumed as we reluctantly took him away from the slide, realizing he had developed an unexpected obsession with it. His little face scrunched up in protest, clearly wanting more of the thrilling descent down the slippery surface. He wasn't even a year old yet he had so much energy and remarkably strong memory for the things he liked. I wasn't surprised because after all he was Ace's son, he had to have all these cunning charms in his DNA.
As I glanced around, scanning for the exit, I noticed a familiar figure in the distance. Squinting against the sunlight, I struggled to recognize the face of the person standing some distance away, engaged in conversation with another individual.
“Is that Adrian?” I whispered, squinting against the sunlight as I finally recognized the figure standing in the distance. His dark hair and confident posture were unmistakable.
“Asswipe Adrian, the one and only,” Zayn muttered under his breath, his voice tinged with a mixture of annoyance and caution, loud enough for me to hear over Andrew's intermittent cries.
“Seriously?”
Zayn nodded grimly, his jaw tightening. “I didn't expect him to show up here.”
As Adrian glanced in our direction, a friendly grin spread across his face. His eyes crinkled at the corners as he exchanged a few words with the person beside him before turning and heading towards us with an air of casual confidence.
“Zayn, Nyx, what a lovely surprise” Adrian greeted with a polite nod, his gaze lingering briefly on Andrew. “Not being judgmental or anything, but I never thought you’d have a child.”
“People come with surprises,” Zayn replied, giving him a smirk. A very unnecessary smirk, I must say, one that hinted at secrets best kept hidden. He wrapped his arms around Andrew and me.
My clue: we have to pretend that Andrew is our son. That makes Zayn his father and me his mother. When Zayn and I aren't even together, the absurdity of it all hits me. Our relationship, if you could call it that, is purely physical, a secret rendezvous of passion and need. We share stolen moments, nothing more. But it is more, he might not have made himself clear about his feelings but one can tell that he cares. And so do I.
“What's wrong? Why is your child crying?” Adrian asked, his eyes narrowing slightly as he took in Andrew's tear-streaked face.
“Because he can,” Zayn replied curtly, his tone laced with irritation.
“Please ignore his rudeness,” I interjected, forcing a pleasant smile despite the tension knotting my stomach. “Zayn being grumpy because we didn't take our son to the place he was suggesting. The thing is, our son loves the slide, but we have to leave, but we don't know where the exit is.”
“Oh, I see,” Adrian nodded, his expression softening with understanding. “The exit isn't far from here. Just take a right and go straight.”
“Thank you, Adrian,” I replied, mustering a polite smile. This guy was like a fairy always here to help us when needed. Well, not always yet twice in a row.
“Pleasure, Ma'am,” Adrian nodded politely. “But before you leave, I have an urgent matter to discuss with Zayn.”
As Adrian's words hung in the air, a flicker of concern passed between Zayn and me. It was clear that whatever Adrian wanted to discuss was serious, and I couldn't shake the feeling that it would complicate our already delicate situation.
Zayn's brow furrowed slightly, his stance subtly shifting into one of cautious readiness. He glanced at me briefly, a silent exchange passing between us that conveyed both concern and determination. A hint of hesitation reflected on his demeanor perhaps he wasn't comfortable around me? As in what if he was hesitant to speak in front of me?
