chapter twelve

The café buzzed with energy as I entered with Eunjoo, her hand resting in mine for support. She looked tired but determined, her usual sparkle dimmed but not extinguished.

We made our way to our reserved table where the rest of the group was already gathering.

Sunoo and Sunhee were in a deep conversation, their voices low but animated. Kiara and Minji were sitting across from them, and the mood was light despite the underlying tension. Ni-ki was nearby, his usual playful grin visible, while Jake and Sunghoon looked relaxed, though I could tell they were just as concerned about Eunjoo as the rest of us.

As we settled in, Minji and Ni-ki were busy with their phones, scrolling and giggling. I took my seat beside Eunjoo, trying to gauge how she was feeling.
She gave me a small smile, but the fatigue was evident in her eyes.

“Alright, let’s get down to business,” I said, trying to steer the conversation. “We need to figure out what’s next for us.”

Before we could dive into serious discussion, I noticed Minji and Ni-ki whispering and snickering to themselves.

Ni-ki’s eyes were glued to his phone, and Minji seemed to be egging him on.

“What’s so funny over there?” Sunghoon asked, eyeing the pair with curiosity.

Minji looked up, her face a picture of innocent mischief. “Oh, nothing much. Just a little surprise for our two favorite guys over here,” she said, pointing at Sunghoon and Jake.

Jake raised an eyebrow. “A surprise? Should we be worried?”

Sunghoon smirked. “I’m always up for a good surprise. Lay it on us.”

Minji and Ni-ki exchanged knowing glances before Minji took out her phone and turned it towards Sunghoon and Jake.

“We’ve been working on something,” she said with a mischievous grin.

The phone screen revealed a collage of pictures and videos of Minji and Ni-ki. To Sunghoon and Jake’s horror, they saw that Minji and Ni-ki had been taking screenshots and photos of their crushes.

The images were candid, sometimes awkward, and sometimes endearing.

“What is this?” Sunghoon asked, his eyes widening in disbelief as he saw Minji’s caption, “Following Sunghoon—Operation Stealth Mode Begins.”

Jake looked over at Ni-ki’s screen, which was similarly filled with pictures of his crush, annotated with comments like “Mission: Instagram Follow” and “Operation Cute Overload.”

“No way,” Jake said, his voice a mix of shock and amusement. “Are you guys seriously trying to follow our crushes on Instagram?”

Minji burst into laughter. “Yep, we’re the devil couple of this group! We’ve been plotting and planning our way into their social media worlds.”

Ni-ki chimed in, still laughing. “And you guys thought we were just being casual! We’ve got strategies and everything.”

Sunghoon’s face turned a shade of red as he tried to process the situation. “You’re kidding me. Are you telling me you’ve been spying on us?”

“Not spying,” Minji corrected, her eyes twinkling. “More like, researching.”

Jake shook his head, trying to suppress a grin. “Well, this is a new level of dedication. I’m impressed.”

The whole group was now laughing, with even Eunjoo managing a chuckle despite her exhaustion. The tension in the room seemed to lift as we all shared in the ridiculousness of Minji and Ni-ki’s antics.
