⚊ chapter twenty five
I couldn’t stay in the waiting room any longer, surrounded by the worried faces of our friends and the agonizing uncertainty of Eunjoo’s condition. My mind was spinning, the weight of everything that had happened crashing down on me.
I needed to talk to them. To explain everything.
“Mr. and Mrs. Cha, Eunwoo,” I called out softly, my voice barely steady as I looked at her parents and brother, who were all gathered near the nurses’ station, speaking in hushed tones.
They turned to face me, their expressions a mix of concern and suspicion.
“Can we go somewhere private? I... I need to tell you everything,” I said, trying to keep my voice from trembling.
I could see the apprehension in their eyes, but they nodded, following me as I led them down the quiet corridors of the hospital. The sterile smell of antiseptic hung in the air, making my stomach churn.
I found the small hospital chapel at the end of the hallway. It was dimly lit, the faint glow from the stained glass windows casting soft colors across the room.
It was peaceful, a stark contrast to the chaos and fear raging inside me.
We entered the chapel, and I closed the door behind us, taking a deep breath to steady myself. They sat in the front pew, waiting expectantly. Eunjoo’s mother was holding onto her husband’s arm, her eyes filled with a quiet strength, while Eunwoo sat stiffly beside them, his gaze hard and unyielding.
I stood in front of them, my hands trembling slightly as I began to speak. “I’m sorry. For everything. I never wanted any of this to happen, especially not to Eunjoo. I... I need to tell you about Hawaii.”
I could see them lean in slightly, their attention fully on me. I told them everything—about how Eunjoo had found out she was pregnant shortly after we arrived in Hawaii, how she had been stressed and scared, and how I had tried to support her but had failed miserably.
I explained the events that had led to this moment, how every decision I made seemed to push us closer to disaster.
Eunjoo’s mother listened intently, her expression softening as I spoke. But when I looked at her father and Eunwoo, I saw the anger simmering beneath the surface.
They were furious, and they had every right to be.
“I... I should have done more to protect her,” I continued, my voice breaking. “I promised you that I wouldn’t let anything happen to Eunjoo, and I failed. I failed all of you.”
Eunjoo’s father’s face was tight with barely restrained anger. “You promised us, Jay. You gave us your word that you would keep her safe, and now look at what’s happened. She’s in a hospital bed, fighting for her life, because of your mistakes.”
Eunwoo was equally livid, his eyes boring into mine. “How could you let this happen? You knew she was vulnerable, you knew she was pregnant, and yet you still let her go through all of this? What kind of a boyfriend does that?”
Their words cut deep, each accusation a stab to my already guilt-ridden heart. I couldn’t argue with them. They were right. I had failed. I had let my own fears and insecurities cloud my judgment, and now Eunjoo and our baby were paying the price.
But Eunjoo’s mother, ever the voice of reason, placed a gentle hand on her husband’s arm. “We’re angry, yes. But this isn’t the time to tear each other apart. We need to focus on Eunjoo and the baby.”
There was a pause, the tension in the room easing just a bit at her words.
She turned her gaze to me, her eyes softening. “Jay, we understand that things happened. We understand that the situation is complicated. But you need to understand that this is our daughter. Our baby girl. And she’s going through something that no parent ever wants to see their child go through.”
