chapter twenty eight

The airport terminal buzzed with activity as travelers hurried by, but my attention was fixed on the large digital display showing flight departures. It was both an exciting and bittersweet moment, leaving behind the familiar but knowing that a new chapter awaited me.

The terminal was filled with a mix of travelers, some in their own worlds, others talking animatedly.

I looked around, and a wave of nostalgia hit me.

This was the same airport where Jaehyuk and I had shared so many moments—our last goodbyes, the dreams we had woven together, and the final moments of our relationship.

I remembered us sitting here, laughing and making plans that never came to fruition.

The memories felt heavy, and I found my eyes welling up despite my efforts to stay composed.

I tried to wipe away my tears quickly, hoping no one would notice.

“Just stop,” I whispered to myself. “Don’t make a scene.”

I forced a small, self-deprecating smile, attempting to regain my composure.

But just as I was about to pull myself together, I heard a gentle voice asking, “Why are you crying again?”

I looked up, startled, to see Lee Jongsuk standing before me, his smile warm and reassuring. He was holding a neatly folded handkerchief, the same one he had offered me in Hawaii.

I blinked in surprise, the familiarity of his presence a comforting reminder. Without a word, I took the handkerchief from him, my fingers brushing against his in a brief moment of connection.

I dabbed at my tears, feeling a bit embarrassed. Jongsuk’s smile remained steady, and he tried to lighten the mood.

“You know,” he said, a playful tone in his voice, “a pretty woman like you shouldn’t be crying over some bastard.” He winked at me, attempting to coax a laugh out of me.

Despite my sadness, I couldn’t help but smile at his attempt to cheer me up. The genuine kindness in his eyes made me feel a bit lighter.

“Thank you,” I said, my voice still shaky but filled with gratitude.

Jongsuk’s smile widened. “So, where are you headed?” he asked.

“Paris,” I replied, my voice tinged with a mixture of excitement and melancholy.

His eyes lit up with recognition. “No way! I’m headed to Paris too. What a coincidence.”

The realization that we were both traveling to the same city made me feel a little more hopeful.

My smile grew brighter, reflecting the newfound optimism I was feeling. “Really? That’s amazing.”

Jongsuk nodded, his smile infectious. “I guess Paris is going to be quite an adventure for both of us.”

As I looked at him, his presence felt like a beacon of light in a moment of darkness. I knew that even though my journey in Paris was starting with a tinge of sadness, it was also filled with new beginnings and possibilities.

Jongsuk’s presence reassured me that perhaps this new chapter would indeed be filled with pleasant surprises.

I took a deep breath and looked at Jongsuk with renewed hope. “I think Paris is going to be wonderful after all.”

Jongsuk grinned. “Absolutely. Here’s to new beginnings and fresh starts.”

We shared a warm smile, and I felt a sense of comfort and excitement.
