chapter twenty one

The sterile, clinical smell of the hospital hit me as we rushed through the sliding doors. I carried Eunjoo carefully, trying to be as gentle as possible while the doctors and nurses swiftly took over.

My heart pounded with anxiety, each step feeling heavier than the last.

The hospital staff guided us to an empty examination room, and I stayed close to Eunjoo, watching as they laid her onto a bed. Their movements were efficient but calm, their voices a mix of clinical detachment and urgency.

As the doctors and nurses entered the room, their movements were swift yet controlled. One nurse adjusted the IV drip while another checked Eunjoo's vital signs with practiced ease.

The lead doctor spoke with a calm, authoritative tone as he reviewed Eunjoo’s chart, his brow furrowed in concentration.

"Prepare for an ultrasound," he instructed, glancing up briefly. "We need to assess the baby's condition and determine the best course of action."

The nurses nodded, quickly setting up the equipment. One nurse gently placed a warm blanket over Eunjoo while another inserted an oxygen mask to help her breathe more easily. Their actions were methodical, almost routine, yet there was a palpable sense of urgency in their precision.

I stood by, feeling a growing knot of anxiety in my chest. The clinical detachment of the medical staff contrasted sharply with the personal turmoil I felt, their efficiency a stark reminder of how serious the situation was.

As the ultrasound machine beeped softly, I could only watch, helpless, as they worked to stabilize the person I cared about most.

I could barely process what was happening, too focused on Eunjoo to think clearly.

As the doctors worked, I felt the weight of the moment settling on me. I had to tell everyone what was going on.

I took a deep breath, trying to steady my nerves. “I need to tell you all something,” I said, my voice steady but strained. “Eunjoo is pregnant.”

The room fell into shocked silence. I saw Isa and Yoon exchange wide-eyed glances, their faces pale.

Isa’s eyes welled up with tears. “What? Pregnant? How did we not notice?”

Yoon’s usual composure was gone, replaced by visible shock. “Eunjoo never mentioned anything about being pregnant. I— I should have seen the signs. This is all our fault.”

I shook my head, feeling a pang of guilt. “It’s not your fault. Eunjoo kept it to herself. She didn’t want to worry any of you, and honestly, she was trying to handle everything on her own.”

Kiara, who had been calm throughout the chaos, was now visibly shaken. “Is she okay? What’s going to happen?”

I took a deep breath, trying to keep my own emotions in check. “The doctors are still running tests and trying to stabilize her. She collapsed from exhaustion and stress, but the pregnancy complicates things. They need to make sure she’s okay and that the baby is safe.”

Sunhee, who had been quietly absorbing the news, finally spoke up, her voice trembling. “I can’t believe we missed this. We were so focused on Chowon and the wedding… I didn’t even think…”

Minji stepped forward, placing a reassuring hand on Sunhee’s shoulder. “None of this is your fault. We were all caught up in the chaos. Right now, we need to focus on supporting Eunjoo and making sure she gets through this.”

As Minji spoke, I felt a hand on my shoulder. Heeseung turned to pat me, offering a gesture of solidarity. Sunghoon stood nearby, his gaze distant and unfocused, clearly in shock.
