⚊ chapter twenty nine
I woke up feeling an unusual sense of joy, a warmth that seemed to seep into every part of me. The soft sunlight filtered through the curtains, casting a golden glow across Jay’s bedroom.
For a few moments, I just lay there, soaking in the peacefulness.
It was such a strange but wonderful feeling, waking up here, without that gnawing worry about my brother finding out. No sneaking around, no secrets—just the freedom of being together out in the open.
And that freedom brought a happiness that I hadn’t expected.
My mind wandered back to the last night I spent at the hospital.
As I drifted back to that night in the hospital, I could still hear Eunwoo’s tearful voice as clearly as if it were happening right now.
It was the night before I was discharged, and everything felt so surreal—like my life was on the edge of a new beginning. Eunwoo had come to visit, and the moment he walked into the room, I knew something was different.
He didn’t say much at first. Instead, he just stood by the door, looking at me with a mix of emotions on his face. I could tell he was trying to keep it together, trying not to let me see how much he was struggling with everything that had happened.
But I knew my brother too well; I could see right through him.
“Eunwoo,” I called out softly, patting the space next to me on the bed. “Come here.”
He hesitated for a moment before finally crossing the room and sitting down beside me. For a long while, he just sat there, staring at his hands, as if searching for the right words.
I waited patiently, knowing he’d speak when he was ready.
Finally, he looked up at me, his eyes shining with unshed tears.
“You know,” he began, his voice thick with emotion, “I always thought I’d be the one to have a baby first. The thought of you becoming a mother before me… it’s hard to wrap my head around.”
I couldn’t help but smile at his honesty. “Well, I guess life has a funny way of surprising us, doesn’t it?”
He nodded, swallowing hard as he tried to keep his composure. “Eunjoo, I’m supposed to be the strong one, the one who looks out for you. But now… now you’re going to be a mother. It’s such a big responsibility, and I’m… I’m scared for you.”
His words hit me harder than I expected, and I reached out, taking his hand in mine. “I’m scared too, Eunwoo. But I’m not alone in this. Jay’s with me, and we’ll figure it out together.”
At the mention of Jay’s name, Eunwoo’s eyes softened a little, and he nodded again. “I know. Jay’s a good guy. He’ll take care of you and the baby.”
For a moment, there was silence, the weight of the conversation hanging in the air. Then, to my surprise, Eunwoo pulled me into a tight hug, burying his face in my shoulder. I could feel him shaking, and when he finally spoke again, his voice was thick with tears.
“I’m just so proud of you, Eunjoo. And I’m happy for you, even if I’m scared. You’re going to be an amazing mother, I know it.”
Hearing his words, my own emotions bubbled to the surface, and I found myself tearing up as well. “Thank you, Eunwoo. That means so much to me.”
He pulled back slightly, his face red and wet with tears, but there was a small smile on his lips. “You know what else? Your baby is going to be spoiled rotten, and not just by me. We’re all going to dote on them so much, they’ll never know what it’s like not to be loved.”
