'Oubliettes': The French version of the 'Obliviate' spell
*****
"The Gaunts... They cured me from the curse," Anne sniffed.
Sebastian stood up abruptly, utterly and absolutely in shock. The chair fell back with the sudden movement, drawing eyes at us.
His jaw was down, but no sounds came out.
"W-what??" I blabbered, my eyelids fluttering.
Sebastian started pacing next to the table. "That is impossible... No..." He kept mumbling to himself.
"Take a seat, brother... Please..." Anne cried.
He picked up the chair, took a sit and scoffed, with a reluctant expression. "I am listening."
"I know we had tried everything. You went above and beyond, Sebastian... But we were looking in the wrong direction all along. The only information the Gaunts needed was who cast the curse: not a goblin, but Viktor Rookwood."
"Yes, thanks to Carolyn who figured that out. But why would that even matter???"
"No dark magic, healing or relics could work. It was a blood curse, Sebastian... It could only be reverted with Rookwood blood sacrifice..."
"But I... killed Viktor Rookwood..." I whispered. "And it didn't revert the curse..."
"Precisely. This is why Ominis' brothers did the impossible." Anne lowered her voice, darting her eyes around before leaning closer to us on the table. With the lowest tone possible, she revealed, "They broke a relative of Viktor Rookwood's from Azkaban."
Sebastian and I exchanged a dumbfounded glance, speechless.
"You... you are saying..." Sebastian stuttered, his tone raspy. "The Gaunts... They broke someone out of Azkaban... For you..."
"Not for me, necessarily... You see, this is how far they were willing to go to make sure they preserve their lineage..."
My breath hitched in my throat. The Gaunts were capable of everything to handcuff me to them, and the thought terrified me. What else were they possibly willing to do?
Sebastian took my hand in his, his eyes widened, appaled. "They are insane. This is ludicrous."
"I know... My reaction was the same when Ominis told me..." Anne panted. "They committed a major crime, Sebastian. Though this kind of thing might come easier for people like them, with the right connections... But a major crime, nonetheless."
Pinching the bridge of his nose, as a last resort to hold him back from leashing out, Sebastian asked, "How did they do it, Anne?"
"They brought her to our house, can you imagine?? Ominis spared me the details but... With the Rookwood blood, and their dark skills... They killed the woman in our own house, and... And it worked. The curse ended."
