"Are you alright?" Sebastian asked, regaining balance and still holding my hand after we apparated one block away from the Gaunt manor. "Do you feel ready? If you change your mind, I'll take you back without thinking twice."

I nodded. "Yes. I'm not expecting a hostile welcome, Sebastian... It will be fine."

"I also think it is unlikely... That is, since you are literally walking into their plan... And agreeing to it..." His voice faltered, and he took a long breath as he rolled his eyes.

"This is our best plan, Sebastian. We just need to buy time."

He brushed the back of my hand with his thumb, his eyes not leaving mine. "I just hope that they don't suspect anything, but, in case things get ugly, there is a spell you should know."

The corner of my lips lightly curved. Sebastian and his endless repertoire of spells would be the death of me.

"Periculum. If you find yourself in danger, you just shoot your wand up to the sky and it will spark like a firework that I'll see from a distance. Just in case."

"Sebastian, I'll be fine! You heard what Auguro said that night, they won't harm me. Fortunately... or rather, unfortunately... They need me alive." I squeezed his hand reassuringly, though part of me was somewhat scared of what the Gaunts were capable of.

"Don't try and play the hero if things get out of hand. Promise you will summon me. Please."

He reached for my face, slowly tucking a strand of hair behind my ear, letting his thumb brush my cheekbone. Sparks flickered all over my body, and I wondered if he knew the effect his touch had on me.

"Fine. I promise," I breathed out, incapable of disagreeing with him when he had me in a chokehold with that innocent touch alone.

"I simply can't afford to lose you again to them. I just... can't." He brought my hands to his lips and planted a long kiss on my knuckles as he squeezed his eyes under knitted eyebrows. "Good luck, Carolyn."

My heart pounded in my ears, painfully imploring my body to just go ahead and take his face in my hands, bring his soft lips to mine and end our agony. Those fleeting moments becoming more frequent were only making it harder to keep decorum.

Every time I stared deep into those hazelnut eyes that gleamed beneath the untamed soft curls, I just wanted everything to go away. But at that point, I just had to keep reminding myself that the pressing unfinished business was more urgent. It was not the time or the place for us to succumb to our desires.

I clung to the hopes that it was not too late, but the right time would come once this was all over.

"Okay. I'm ready." Shaking the thoughts away with a deep breath, I turned on my heel and marched towards the iron gates, and Sebastian disappeared behind me under a disillusionment spell.
