══════ ∘◦ ᓚᘏᗢ ◦∘ ══════YOU, SAYAKO, AND three other hybrids stood inside the meeting house, waiting. They were excited. You could hardly fight your exhaustion. Seriously, who thought six in the morning was a good time? The morning sun hadn't even risen. You figured it was part of the retreat process. Something about a vulnerable state of mind. You yawned before pulling your loose backpack strap onto your shoulder.
Sayako waved her hand in your face to get your attention. She pointed at her neck and asked, "Since when?"
You reached for your collar, having forgotten you were wearing it. To her question, you simply shrugged.
She lowered her voice to whisper. "The non-mutant you mentioned before? Is it? I won't tell anyone if it is."
You didn't say anything, letting your silence act as a response.
"Are you dating?" she pressed, suddenly too intrigued for your comfort.
Your ears turned backward, irritated. "No. He just gave it to me so I wouldn't miss home too much."
She sighed. "You can't trust non-mutants. Even the ones who seem nice! Hopefully you'll learn that on the retreat."
You bit your tongue on your opinion and forced, "Yeah, you're right."
"I know it's hard at first but it's better this way." She rested a consoling hand on your shoulder. "I just don't want you to get used by some non-mutant guy, okay? They don't care about us."
"Uh-huh."
Both of your heads turned towards the creak of the main entrance.
"Leader!" Sayako cheered.
Washijo stepped in, wings stretched, his grey meeting robe on, and smiling warmly like the early hour didn't affect him at all. His entrance vitalized the others, all buzzing with a new excitement.
"Good morning, everyone. Mr. Issei is here to take you all to the Unity Retreat. Please follow his instructions."
"Are you coming with us?" Sayako asked. Her hyena tail wagged so hard it looked like it would fall off.
He shook his head and explained, "Leaders from the other branches will be there waiting for you to arrive. I am only here to wish that you all have an enlightening time and I want to remind you all to make the most out of the retreat experience. I hope that you all find peace with your inner hybrid and learn to re-embrace your quirks."
With that message, everybody said goodbye to Washijo. The cold wind barged inside before you stepped out last and the door shut behind you.
The five of you walked towards a lone sitting van. A tall man other than Issei got out of the passenger side and gruffed, "Bags in the trunk."
