THE NEXT DAY, RORY'S ENERGY HAD DOUBLED. She was feeling less and less ill, thanks mainly to the medication she was taking, which fortunately was working. She had just been examined and the doctors had discharged her. She would be able to go home in a few minutes. She had visited Steve again that morning and he seemed to be doing better.

Earlier in the day, she had received a warm visit from Miles, who had shown up with a lovely little bouquet of flowers and a box of blueberries, her favorite fruit. They had chatted and laughed a bit, which was undoubtedly good for her self-esteem.

Of course, Miles tried hard to get the truth out of her, pestering her with countless questions- after all, everything that had happened was very strange, even though they were already used to such things happening in that town. And since she even trusted him, she answered his questions honestly and told the truth. Or the half-truth, actually. Miles knew she was looking for Barb, although he was never interested in accompanying her on her journey. He claimed he didn't want to get into trouble. And Rory didn't mind either, after all she didn't need any help.

But he was also the bearer of bad news. I mean, he just brought the newspapers that had been printed that day, because she loved newspapers, he claimed. And of course, the whole disaster she had experienced was no longer unknown to all of Hawkins.

Rory picked up the folded newspaper on the bed and read the news again.

"The teen missing since Halloween night, Aurora Hargrove, was mysteriously found alive in Lover's Lake last Wednesday morning, along with a boy who had reportedly been missing since Tuesday when he failed to show up at the local school, Hawkins High. According to some local sources, the boy had been searching for the girl on his own since the beginning of the week. The boy, Steve Harrington, is alive at Hawkins Memorial Hospital, as is the girl, but he has serious injuries. . ."

Oh, shit. She never thought her name would be in the Hawkins newspapers. The curse seems to have reached her as well. But of course they didn't mention any details— the Hawkins lab would never allow the truth to get out. What really happened would always be a mystery. They couldn't just say that gates to an alternate reality were tearing through Hawkins' land and absorbing people.

And now Steve Harrington would be known as the hero— the savior— for his selfless act. Which was no lie, but she could already imagine him surrounded by the entire school, receiving honors and applauses. She knew Steve loved some praise. She rolled her eyes at the thought. She wanted to keep glimpsing the humility she found in him. Yes, he should be recognized, but she didn't want him to get overconfident.
