TWO OF THE STRANGE AMERICAN INVADERS HAD ALREADY ESCAPED — DUSTIN AND ERICA.
But the other three had become trophies for the Soviets. The other three were sitting in uncomfortable chairs, bound by strips of black duct tape, turned away from each other in an imperfect triangle. Traces of fresh blood crust were still spread across Steve's face, just below his swollen black eye.
The number of punches from the guards to his face matched the number of needles that stabbed Rory's heart each time she turned her head to the right to partially glimpse her boyfriend's face. And the worst part was that Harrington could barely look at her — because he could hardly open his left eye.
"Help!" Buckley's voice echoed through the corridors, so she was screaming so loud that it left Hargrove partially deaf.
But she no longer cared. Rory's face showed serenity, with a drop of indifference and disgust. She had been in that futuristic hole, miles underground, for nearly fifteen hours, unable to receive or give any news.
Is my brother still alive?
The nervousness had never left her body, but every time she thought about it, a wave of anxiety hit her chest. Shit, I'm stuck here when I should be helping my brother.
"Can you stop yelling?" a low murmur came from the man who had until then been motionless. Rory felt a tear of relief form in the corner of her eye, and Robin let out a deep sigh.
"Oh, Steve, thank God you're alive. Are—are you okay?"
"I can barely breathe, my eye feels like it's about to pop out of my skull, but apart from that, I'm doing pretty good."
"Well, the good news is that they're calling you a doctor."
"They were being sarcastic."
Rory spoke in a hoarse, demotivated voice — which awakened Steve's sense of concern.
"Oh, Aura, how're you doing? Did they hurt you both?" He tilted his head slightly, trying to look at his girlfriend.
"We only got slapped twice. So hard they made us see stars." Robin answered.
But nothing compared to the suffering they inflicted on Steve, Rory thought, as if he were a punching bag. She wished she could touch him, but her hands were tied to her sides.
Robin responded based on what had happened to the two of them in the room they now found themselves in. Rory was dressed differently from Buckley and Harrington.
