HE COULD HEAR THE SOUND OF THE BLOOD pulsing in his ears. Even with his eyes closed, he could see the pulsing reddish light as water flooded his lungs. Even trying to breathe in, he couldn't— there was no more oxygen to keep him alive. Something so simple that we take it for granted. But when we lack it, we sail toward death.

Death. A word that brought back memories from the back of his mind. It reminded him of those deadly, hungry creatures. Of the darkness and the cold that weakened their bodies. The fear. The bright, burning fire. The deep water. Of Rory.

Such memories caused a pain in his heart, like a knife piercing his flesh, and suddenly his eyes flew open.

The rhytmic throbbing of his heartbeat echoed in his head like a distant beep, gradually intensifying. His diaphragm moved up and down with great intensity.

What happened to Rory?

The sight of her standing there, staring at the dark, cloudy sky, played tricks on his nervous system. He had to save her— the motto that was stuck in his brain during the past few days. The creatures were coming. He couldn't let her die. It would be his fault.

"Rory..."

Steve mumbled, still slowly waking up, moving his head from side to side, completely confused, intoxicated by his own thoughts. His whole body ached. His brain was still dizzy, and he felt a hellish headache, and his mouth tasted of blood.

But there was enough oxygen to keep his organs working.

He opened his eyes and didn't see anyone, but was dazzled by an intense light coming from the ceiling that nearly blinded his eyes, which were still used to the darkness. And his brain still hadn't figured out where he was, so he kept calling out:

"Rory...!"

LIKE STEVE, RORY HAD SPENT THE NIGHT AT THE HOSPITAL, but she was conscious. However, they had tried to bandage all her cuts. And finally, she'd had her first decent meal in days, although her stomach hadn't taken to it very well because it wasn't used to it.

Early the next morning, her family rushed to visit her as soon as they were contacted.

The first person to appear at the door, her face pale with worry, surprised by the good news, rushed over to Rory to give her a tender hug. She was well aware of her stepsister's difficulty in showing affection, but it was nice to feel her body being warmed and snuggled in her arms. She inhaled the scent of her hair.
