"OH... I HAD NO IDEA YOU TWO MET LIKE THAT. It seems Steve always had a superhero instinct in him." Rory sneered, lifting her chin to show a proud smile.

Steve smiled shyly without meeting her eyes. "No, it was no big deal. Everyone could do it."

There he was, minimizing his accomplishments, as if he did heroic acts every day. Or maybe it was just a hint of humility coming through.

"Yes, but that is nothing compared to the way he saved you." Dustin countered in an eloquent voice, smiling at Rory.

She couldn't help but smile shyly, overwhelmed by so much altruism. Pull yourself together, Rory, you're not some princess who needed to be rescued by a prince. It was just a coincidence. He'd do the same for anyone.

"Okay, fine, I guess. Let's not get overexcited here, okay?" In fact, lately, Steve hated being complimented - it made him feel uncomfortable. Rory couldn't help but chuckle a little. It was strange because he used to love being the center of attention.

The pleasant moment and the laughing atmosphere on the bus were shattered by a distant growl. A shiver ran down their spines like an electric shock. That high-pitched sound was there again, close by. Rory felt petrified. But she couldn't freeze in panic, not this time.

All of them quickly raised their bodies to the window, moved by the fear, and squinted through the bars, clinging to them. Rory positioned herself between the boys, one hand on her knee and the other on Steve's shoulder, and approached the window. Their tense bodies were so close that Dustin's hair brushed against Rory's forehead and her hair hung down Steve's neck.

A thick fog covered the ground, rippling gently in the wind like waves. It suddenly reminded her of the landscape of a beach at dawn. The only light came from a few distant lamps.

"Do you see him?" Dustin interrupted nervously.

"No." He shook his head slightly.

Rory narrowed her eyes to look in the distance, but the dim light made it difficult. So she looked at Steve instead, who was standing just to her left. Steve's skin glowed in the bluish light from outside, shading the shapes of his face.

"Lucas? What's going on?" Dustin shouted, causing Rory's tense body to shake a little.

Steve and Rory's accelerated breathing slightly fogged the window glass.

Their heartbeats per minute multiplied, predicting the worst.

"I've got eyes! Ten o'clock!" Lucas yelled from above.
