THE VOICES AROUND STEVE SOUNDED DISTANT, as if he was underwater. His weakened brain also picked up the noisy sound of screeching tires, revving engines, and the sloshing of liquids swirling in the can.

And he felt a shaking beneath his body, which only increased his nausea and the urge to vomit.

He dared to open his eyes, but his vision was still blurry, and the darkness that surrounded him didn't make it any easier. He looked straight ahead, raised his head to look straight ahead, but the images oscillated in his field of vision, confusing everything.

"Nancy?" He managed to stammer, but he should have kept quiet.

He realized he'd been mistaken when he could see more clearly that it was Mike who was squinting at him, confused and subtly offended.

With his peripheral vision still affected, Dustin leaned forward to appear in the older boy's field of vision.

The words spoken by Dustin with his face close to his own were already audible, but they echoed in his brain, making him dizzy. His face was still throbbing to the rhythm of the blows he had received.

When he finally managed to open his eyes and see clearly, he could see his body lying across the bench, on the laps of the three boys. He felt something cold pressed against his head, while the curly-haired one spoke reassuring words.

Steve's mind was still confused, lost in a fog of thoughts, but he was lucid enough to realize that he shouldn't be stuck in a car.

He cocked his head to the right and saw the light brown-haired girl sitting behind the wheel - her face turned tense over her shoulder when she realized Steve had woken up.

Steve couldn't believe what he saw. He had promised to take care of her. And what does Rory do? Running away from her refuge - the Byers house - towards the unknown - or rather, the unwanted acquaintance.

"What the hell is going on?" He said, his voice hoarse.

"Just relax..." Dustin tried to keep Steve's panic from rising.

"Stop the car!" Despite his aching body, Steve tried - unsuccessfully - to sit up.

"Steve, don't worry, we have everything under control..." It was Rory's turn to try to calm things down. She had no idea if things were under control - after all, they were improvising, but for now everything was going well - until Steve woke up.
