CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE
❛ GREAT RESPONSABILITY ❜
╸you're stronger than you believe.
"STEVE, ARE YOU AN IDIOT OR WHAT?" Rory spat as soon as she had the opportunity to exchange a few words with Steve in a corner of the house in privacy, with frustration written all over her face — because he betrayed her trust. "We talked about it and we agreed that it would be a secret between the two of us! So why did you rush out and tell everyone about our theory that hasn't been confirmed yet?!"
She leaned forward slightly, not sparing the aggressive movements of her hands as she spoke, to the point of stabbing his chest with the tips of her fingers.
It was Steve's turn to raise his hands in defence, using a low tone so no one could hear but not as authoritatively as Rory spoke to him. "I know, I'm sorry, but it might be necessary to help Will and solve all this mess! Besides, you couldn't hide this any longer, it's something very important..."
"Exactly why you should have kept your mouth shut!" She shouted in a high-pitched whisper.
Harrington ran a nervous hand through his hair.
"I couldn't keep my mouth shut when you could be an important piece of the puzzle." He put one hand on his own chest and the other on Rory's shoulder, arching his back slightly to look her straight in the eye. "Only I know how brave, clever and fearless you are, and I know you'll be able to handle this perfectly. I have faith in your abilities. And you're not alone, we'll find a way to deal with this together, okay?" He nodded gently, trying to get the same affirmative movement from the girl in front of him.
She looked away, obviously upset that he had broken his promise. She closed her eyes tightly. But Steve knew it wasn't easy to be in her shoes. He took a step forward.
"Okay, I'm sorry." He grabbed her chin gently and turned it slowly so that their eyes met again. "Hey, don't stop trusting me because of it. You know I only want the best for you and for all these people, just like you do. And I know that you'll be happy to help in any way that's needed. And who knows, you might even be useful in ways that none of us can, because you're special... for many reasons."
"I'm not able to-"
"Yes, you are." He nodded, strands of hair swaying in front of his forehead. "You've picked up a shotgun and killed creatures from another dimension, you've sneaked into a lab... you've done harder things. You just need to trust yourself a bit more."
Rory instinctively bit her lip, thoughtful.
"Thank you for... those words and for thinking like that. I'm just afraid... that I'll fail, that I won't be able to help as I should, because I don't know how to use these powers, or how they can be useful at all!" A small panic gripped Rory.
