"OUCH, RORY!" MAX GROANED. "Is this really necessary?" she asked, already bored of sitting in front of her bedroom mirror, staring into her stepsister's eyes in the reflection.

"Sorry." Rory continued combing her Max's hair, a calm smile on her face. "Trust me, it'll be worth it. You're going to look even more beautiful than you already do."

Max gave a small, shy smile, lowering her gaze to her hands as she thought. She'd been pensive ever since Rory had offered to do her hair. Rory, flashing a mischievous grin, couldn't resist commenting as she braided a strand of hair.

"So, is there someone in particular who's going to admire your beauty today?"

"No." Max responded quickly, but Rory already knew the real answer before she even asked. She paused for a second, locking eyes with her sister in the mirror. Then Max hesitated.

"Maybe..." she replied, her voice trailing off.

"Ah, that's good. And is this admirer by any chance... Lucas Sinclair?" Rory couldn't hold back a small laugh as she watched her stepsister try to hide her flushed face.

"Stop it!" Max wasn't amused, but Rory's laughter was contagious. "It's not a big deal."

"Why not? It's super cute. And from what I've seen, he's kind, he makes you laugh, and he seems like a good guy. He's good company."

Max looked down, fiddling with a hairpin, her mind clearly elsewhere.

"Yeah, I know." She said quietly.

"Don't turn down an opportunity just because you're scared of how it might turn out. It's not bad to have special friends." Rory continued.

Mayfield's thoughtful expression suddenly shifted. "Yeah, well, you have special friends too."

Rory raised an eyebrow, clearly unprepared to talk about herself.

"Uh?" She replied, trying to play it cool.

"Yeah... I still haven't forgotten that night at the Byers' house." A small smirk curled up at the corner of Max's lips. After finishing the last braid, Rory stood in front of her sister and started applying blush to her already rosy cheeks.

"Uhm, neither have I... but what are you talking about?" Rory furrowed her brow, pretending not to know what her sister meant.

"You and Steve, outside, about to kiss..." Max shot back quickly, a playful gleam in her eyes.
