Nothing in Bexley's life was ever going to go smoothly. And she was beginning to accept that fact.

The plan, according to JJ, was to call John B and get a ride to the docks, find Bexley's car, and then follow the map to Goat Island.

But nothing ever went according to plan.

John B didn't answer. And after scrounging up enough spare change to catch a bus ride out to the docks, they found that JJ's father had left town on his boat, but Bexley's car was, of course...not there.

JJ dropped his bag on the ground. "Shit," he mumbled. "Maybe-He-" He ran a hand through his hair. "Shit. Maybe he parked it somewhere else."

"Where?"

"I don't know." JJ let out a stressed sigh. "Shit."

Bexley took a deep breath, dragging her hands over her face.

"I'm sorry, Bex," JJ said pitifully. "I really thought it'd be here."

Somehow, she knew it wouldn't be.

"He probably ditched it," Bexley told him. "Because he figured we'd call the cops about it being stolen."

JJ cursed again. "I'm sure we can find it somewhere along this road-"

"JJ, why didn't you let me call the cops?" she suddenly demanded.

Her voice was harsh, and accusative.

JJ shifted uncomfortably. "I thought we'd get it right back-"

"We didn't," she said. "He could've rolled it into the water for all we know."

"I'm sorry," he said again. "But-He just got out of jail, Bex. Just today. He's my dad, I couldn't send him right back in."

She let out a low scoff. She turned on her heel, walking to the road, saying, "We have John B's location, yeah? Let's start heading there."

"Goat Island is, like, an hour away by car," JJ said. "We're not gonna make it there walking."

"Then what are we doing?" Bexley asked him, upset. "Where are we supposed to go?"

"We could go back to Pope's house."

"But they're waiting for us," she insisted. "More than that, they're counting on us for that map. They could get stuck out there when the tide comes in."

"I'm sure they'll figure it out," JJ tried to tell her."Look, I'll keep trying John B's phone."

Bexley didn't seem satisfied with his answer.

"Do you think that Pope would be mad if we took his dad's truck?" she asked. "I mean, his parents are out of town, they won't notice. It's kind of an emergency, isn't it?"

"Pope took the truck keys specifically so that no one would take it."

She made a frustrated sound.

"I'm sure they've found the cross already," JJ said. "They're probably loading it into The Twinkie right as we speak."

She didn't even crack a smile as his attempted joke.

Bexley scanned the parking lot, like her car would be hidden somewhere, and she just had to look harder for it.

JJ came and took her hand. "Let's go back to Pope's," he said again. "Who knows, they might be there already."

She told him, "If they're stuck in some ditch somewhere, they're gonna blame us."
