"Vox, can we at least talk first?" asked Alastor, his back against the wall, as his enemy began closing in.

"What is there to talk about? You dumped me for no reason and locked me up for, like, a year to torture me. I don't have anything I'd like to say to you other than I'm going to fucking smash your brains out."

"I did not dump you for 'no reason'. You dumped me, remember?" Alastor asked,  pretending to be all sweet and innocent.

"Oh, quit the act! In public, yeah, that happened, but we both know how it really went down. You were sick of me and just got with me to use my powers until you made your way to the top, just like Valentino."

"That's not the case. You'd understand that if we had ever talked since then."

"I don't care. I just want you gone, okay? That's gonna happen whether you keep stalling like this or not, so just shut up and let me blast you to smithereens."

Vox knew he was scared. He saw weakness in the Radio Demon. That wasn't allowed.

"Vox, dearest, you're so funny. What makes you think you can destroy me?"

"Um, the fact that you're fucking terrified of me right now gives off that vibe. This wouldn't scare you if you didn't know I could kill you."

"Hmm. Alright, then. I suppose that's a good answer. Why must you kill me today? Couldn't it wait? No, it couldn't, because just like the stupid technology you preach about, you think you have to make your move in an instant."

"While I love that analogy, I've been putting this off for years. You want me to wait? Well, I have. It's time, so shut your radio-loving mouth. It'll hurt less if you do."

"May I have the opportunity to tell you my side of the story?"

"I already told you I didn't want to hear it."

"I think we both know that's a lie. You want to know exactly what you did wrong so you can fix it for all your future lovers. Don't think I forgot about that. The version I gave you back in the day? Even I didn't know exactly what was wrong. I always felt- cared about in our relationship. Something was off and I now know exactly what that is."

With an eye roll, Vox responded, "Okay, talk, but you have less than one minute to explain yourself." On his cyan TV face, a countdown timer lit up.

"When I said I never liked you like that, it sounded super wrong, but it was the closest I got to the truth. As you know, I've been in relationships before, but I've only dated women since I didn't know I could branch out beyond females. However, I never felt the way I was supposed to when we were together. They loved me because I was polite, but they expected more from me and I couldn't give it to them. When I met you, I thought maybe the problem was the gender. If I tried dating a man,  I thought, then maybe I'll feel he way I'm supposed to. All that time, I tried to convince myself I felt something, but over those last few months, I realized the truth: I can't feel romantic love or sexual love."

"Oh." The timer had been over for a few moments, but Alastor's story seemed interesting enough that Vox ignored it, and sure enough, he delivered. That man always had a way with words.

"I suppose you could say that I'm, well, sorry." Sorry. The word didn't taste good in Alastor's mouth, yet it truly was how he felt. Plus, these words could save his life. "Yes, that's right. I wish I could have told you the truth sooner. You didn't deserve to have such a terrible partner." God, what a lie that was. Alastor may have felt remorse for hurting Vox like that but he spoke like he owed him this. He didn't owe him anything.
