"Sera, are you kidding me?" Emily asked, astounded. "Our top angel, Adam for the love of God, has died, and you still think we should send angels down to Hell to exterminate them?"
"We have to control the population somehow," Sera sighed. She knew Emily had a huge heart and beautiful dreams, but she didn't understand that they couldn't just let sinners into Heaven. They had established the rule that those in Hell would stay in Hell no matter what. If they changed everything, the Bible would have to be rewritten and the entire system would be thrown off. Souls would disagree with the new rules and chaos was bound to break loose. Emily may have thought Charlie Morningstar, daughter of Lucifer, had a good idea with her hotel, but things were more dangerous than they seemed.
"You know what I'm going to say to that." Emily was getting pissed off. Ever since the meeting with the demons, she and Sera had been arguing non-stop. The worst part is, they had never really fought before. Both were agreeable souls and hated conflict. Neither knew what to do with the tension being created between them.
"Emily, we can not let demons into Heaven. It's out of the question. Lucifer tried to solve Hell's overpopulation the same way, and you know how it went down."
"I do, but you know what? He fought for what he believed was right no matter what others thought of him, and I admire him for that, and you know what, Sera? Maybe I should do the same."
Sera was beginning to get worried. Surely Emily didn't mean what she was saying- right? "Emily, absolutely not. I don't know how many times I need to tell you this, but sinners cannot join us in Heaven. Their souls have been dirtied beyond repairable. No amount of holy water or work can make them clean."
Emily couldn't believe what she was saying. "Were you not there when Angel Dust proved he had what it took to get into Heaven? I bet that if he died now he would fly straight up here and it wouldn't make a difference."
"Those in Hell stay in Hell."
"Sera, we were both there when Sir Pentious entered Heaven. Yeah, he was bad, but after lots of hard work, he was redeemed! If he hadn't changed, he wouldn't have made it into Heaven with us."
"Emily, I'm done with this conversation! There's nothing you can do to change my mind."
"You may be done, Sera, but I'm not. If angels can fall, why can't demons rise?"
"Because that's not how it fucking works! The rules were decided millennia ago, and no matter what you say, we're not changing them."
"Maybe we need to get someone else involved? I don't know, Sera! Why won't you listen? Why won't you help? Those in Heaven are supposed to forgive. We're supposed to understand and make the world better. Sera, please! Do you not care about all souls?"
Sera was starting to break. She'd never seen bright, sparkly Emily so desperate. She couldn't bear to break this sweet angel's heart again. "Emily, just go. I can't do this anymore."
"What do you mean, go? Go where?"
"GO AWAY!" Sera roared. It felt like all of Heaven grew silent. Never had Sera yelled like that before. She gasped. "No, Emily, I-"
"Oh, you want me to go away? Oh, okay. Alright then. Sure. I'll go away." Emily sniffled. She had never been yelled at like that before.
"No, I meant-"
"I understand what you meant just fine. You don't care about what I have to say. Just because I'm younger doesn't mean I'm dumber than you. I have thoughts, opinions, and feelings, and you won't listen to them. I've made some good points and you know it, no matter what you say. If you don't want me here, fine! You're so high and mighty, so obviously you're always right."
"That's not what I mean at all, I just-"
"You want me to go away. My job is to listen to you no matter what. Fine! I'll go away." Emily got up from the stunning gold chair she was sitting in.
"Where are you going?" Sera was crying, too. All she wanted was for this conversation to end, but she got mad instead. Now Emily thought she hated her and believed the best thing she could do was to run away.
"Make a guess, Sera. Where do you think I'm going?"
"Please, I don't know!"
"I'm going somewhere where everyone is accepted, a place where anyone is welcomed."
"Please, Emily, I don't understand."
"I'm going to Hell." Sera gasped. Hell? The place where sinners spent eternity burning in misery? Sera knew she was stubborn, but this was a whole new level. Emily was going to the worst place imaginable just because she didn't like Sera's rules.
"You can't! Please, let's talk this out. Maybe you're right! Maybe we should change our ways! You such an incredible seraphim; there's no way you belong down there."
"Just like you, I've already made up my mind. Nothing you say will change my decision. If you won't consider what I have to say, why should I do that for you?" Emily didn't want to leave the paradise that was Heaven, but she knew it was the only way to get those angels to listen and make a change.
"Emily, I'm begging you, let's think this out and solve it rationally."
"Lucifer got through Hell just fine. I think I'll be okay."
"Lucifer was also one of the most hated angels ever. I don't want that to happen to you."
"It won't if I can make a difference."
"Please, Emily!" At this point, Sera was practically down on her knees begging. "I just want to keep you safe. You're my favorite angel in all of Heaven, Emily. I couldn't live with myself if you lived out the same fate as him.
Emily paused. She had always known Sera cared about her, but not this much! "Sera, you know I love you, but I have to do what's right for all the souls in Heaven and Hell. If I go down there people might start to change their minds. I don't know if it'll work but I have to try. I can help Charlie. You can't stop me from going to Hell."
"I know I can't, but I'm worried; what will happen to you?"
"I don't know, but I'm going to find out. I'll see you again, Emily. Keep things in Heaven safe." With that, Emily made her descent down to the realm of Hell.
