Amali POV
I stared out of the window and sighed. This was not at all how I had imagined my year would be. But now it was too late. I couldn't change anything. No matter how much I pained and this pain had nothing to do with my shoulder.
After a while, I heard the door open. So I turned my head carefully to see who it was. A small smile crept across my lips. But it didn't last long. The first new tears quickly formed and slowly ran down my cheeks.
"Hey my baby... How are you feeling? Are you in pain?" Mom asked as she rushed to my side.
"Yes, and it has nothing to do with the injury..." I replied and looked away.
Again I stared out of the window. But the view hadn't changed. It was the same skyscrapers as the last few days. What I wouldn't have given to see something else. Like the sea, for example. That would have been too wonderful now.
"Oh sweetheart... You'll be back in the ring in no time. I promise." Mom said as she sat down next to me on the bed and took my free hand in hers.
"You can't promise me that, Mom... Not even the doctors know if I'll ever be able to go back. Don't make it harder for me than it already is." I replied quietly and took my hand from her so that I could wipe away my tears.
"Cheer up, Amali Mae. We didn't raise you to be a pessimist, did we?" she asked.
"Where is Dad anyway?" I wanted to know without answering her question.
"Paul just called and he just wanted to talk to him. I'm sure he'll be there soon. Oh and... There's someone waiting outside the door to see you." she replied.
"What? Who?" I wanted to know.
Before she could give me an answer, the door opened and Dad came in. And he wasn't alone. When my eyes met the person standing behind him, I didn't know how to react.
"What are you doing here?" was all I could say.
"Hi Amali. I saw what happened and got in touch with your parents. I just had to see if you were okay. How are you my darling?" he said.
It was Terence. My ex and probably the last person I expected to see.
"You really have no business here. How many times have I told you that I don't want you to contact me anymore? That hasn't changed. I didn't want to talk to you on the phone and now I certainly don't want to see you," I replied.
Anger and incomprehension boiled up inside me. I sat up, but immediately regretted it when a sharp pain shot through my shoulder.
"You see, Molly... I told you." Dad mumbled as he rushed to my side to make sure I didn't get any more upset.
"Frank, this is certainly not the time to rub my nose in it. They were together for so long. I thought it was sweet that he was worried," Mom replied.
"You should leave. You can see it upsets Amali." Dad then said, addressing my ex.
I saw an angry yet disappointed expression cross his face. He opened the door to leave and then almost ran into a nurse holding a large bouquet of roses.
"Miss Stryker? These were just delivered for you," she said, placing them on the small table next to my bed before handing me the small card that came with the beautiful purple roses.
I had never seen roses in this beautiful color before. Immediately I was sure that it must have a deeper meaning and I planned to find out what it was soon.
"Who sent you such lovely flowers, sweetheart?" my mother wanted to know.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw that Terence still hadn't left. Instead, he was eyeing the arrangement of flowers suspiciously.
"You can go now," I said sharply before reading the card.
He left with a snort. The door didn't exactly close quietly behind him.
"Can you help me?" I asked my mother when I realized that I couldn't get the card out of the envelope with one hand.
Again it became clear to me that I would need a lot of help in the coming weeks... or rather months.
She carefully opened it and then handed me the card.
"Here, honey..." she said and I knew she was very curious to find out who it was that sent her daughter flowers to the hospital.
Amali - Hopefully these roses will put a little smile on your face. I pray that you feel better soon. Let me know how you are doing please. I will visit you soon. I promise. x R
"Oh does someone have a secret admirer?" Dad asked me.
"Not so secret for me. But for you guys. You always told me not to be so nosy. And that goes for you now." I replied with a little laugh as I couldn't take my eyes off the flowers.
