Lea didn't know if this hole was going to be enough to get enough air out of the tire, but now there was no turning back. Without saying anything, she turned around and slowly started to drive. Her heart was beating like crazy, how could her father let Samuel take part in this personally? He should be sitting by her father's side right now, not looking for her all over town and the neighborhood. Samuel was the only bodyguard she hadn't discovered, everyone else she could track down, but not him. Besides, he made her uncomfortable, appearing out of nowhere just when she wanted time alone to plan her next escapes, like in the kitchen over breakfast.
She started the car and waited for the highway to thin out, then turned on her left turn signal as she merged into the flow of traffic. In the rear view mirror, she saw the security car pull away from behind her. They were sticking close to her, so she decided not to drive too fast, to buy herself some time. She didn't know how far she was from the next exit, and she couldn't check because her phone's display was shattered. At one point she noticed the security car slowing down and pulling over to the side of the road with its hazard lights on. Lea stepped on the gas and accelerated, after a moment she disappeared from their view, looked at the phone and tilted the window, throwing it onto the road. The force of the fall smashed it to pieces, adding to Lea's satisfaction as a truck drove over it.
She didn't care about the consequences of what she had done, she didn't want to be locked in a golden cage, she didn't want to live like that, she lacked normalcy and she lacked the feeling that she was the one who could decide what happened to her. Because at that point, everyone else decided what she should wear, how she should act, what she should eat and who she should hang out with. Her parents were even planning who she would marry without any input from her at all, and without any input from her at all. And she didn't want to, she didn't even want to have children, she was just not suited to that. She had five siblings, her parents should take care of her other brothers and sisters and not interfere with her ruling the kingdom.
Lea was so lost in her own thoughts that she didn't even notice when a black car pulled out in front of her. She had to slam on her brakes to avoid running into the car. She pulled over to the side of the road and stopped. Samuel got out of the car, you could tell by his expression that he was pissed. He had removed his jacket and shirt, was wearing a black t-shirt, and his hands were greasy from changing the tire. He opened the driver's side door and shook his head disapprovingly.
– Move over – he threw out in a sharp tone of voice.
– You've got to be kidding – she began, but seeing his expression, she fell silent and moved to the passenger seat.
Samuel sat behind the wheel with a heavy sigh, adjusted his seat and drove off with almost screeching tires. Lea crossed her arms over her chest, at least she had bought herself some time, she had a look at her watch, the ceremony was just about to start and she was a long way from home and would certainly not make it in time. How wrong she was, she found out two minutes later, when Samuel pulled off the highway and stopped at the roadside.
– Get out – he chuckled as he got out of the car and took the keys out of the ignition, just to be on the safe side.
Lea looked at him without understanding, watching him as he jumped over the barriers that separated the highway from the fields. After a moment, a helicopter arrived and landed safely in the field.
– This has got to be some kind of fucking joke – she said, unable to believe what she was seeing.
They sent a helicopter to pick her up, belonging to a friend of her father's, actually the father of the guy they were trying to set her up with. Henry, who was dressed in a suit, got out of the helicopter and exchanged a few words with Samuel. Her stomach was churning with nervousness. She reached for her belt clip to unbuckle it, but her car was hit by a truck. At the last moment, the truck noticed a car in front of it changing lanes, and the driver reflexively swerved to the right to avoid a collision, but hooked Lea's car.
Samuel heard a loud bang, turned his back on Henry, and started to run as soon as he saw that the car in which Lea was sitting had retraced its steps and had penetrated the barriers that had been pushed by the truck. The car stopped on the roof. Lea was hanging upside down because she was still strapped in. She felt a sharp throbbing in her temple as her head hit the windshield. She felt blood on her fingers when she touched her forehead. She couldn't unbuckle the seatbelt. She reached into her pocket for a pocket knife, but she didn't have the strength to open it because she felt a pain in her head that was paralyzing her. Samuel broke the glass on the driver's side door with a couple of kicks and cautiously slid in.
