Lea shook her head disapprovingly and lay back on the pillow. She was not going to run away from the hospital, maybe with a gesture like that, Samuel would at least be able to get some sleep. She could see he was tired, he'd already worked more than twelve hours, and if he kept watching over her, it didn't look like he'd be going home anytime soon.

In truth, she had no idea if he had a wife or children; in fact, she had little knowledge of the personal lives of her father's bodyguards. Most of the time they tried to be invisible and were somewhere off to the side without drawing attention to themselves. Besides, Samuel did not have a wedding ring on, either not having a wife or not wearing one for security purposes. She heard a soft snoring, Samuel fell asleep, she breathed a sigh of relief, against all odds she didn't want to draw attention to herself or to her father or to his bodyguards. All she cared about was being able to take care of herself in peace and quiet.

It was getting dark outside. Lea hadn't been able to sleep, the nurse had looked in on her several times during the night, so she had pretended to be asleep so as not to make a fuss. She had always taken the after effects of the anesthesia very badly, but today it was too much. At about 4 a.m., she was feeling very tired, and when she rolled over on her other side, Samuel was still asleep in the chair. His cell phone was on, but it must have been muted, because there was no sound or vibration from it. Lea sat down on the bed and looked at the screen. Her father was on the phone, what on earth could he be up to at this hour of the night? She carefully picked up the phone and walked out of the room to answer it.

– Hi dad – she said into the receiver of the phone.

– Lea? How are you feeling, darling? – the man asked with concern when he recognized the voice of his daughter – is something wrong with Samuel? – he asked suspiciously.

– He's fine – she added with a heavy sigh – I'm fine too, they'll be releasing me tomorrow morning after the examination – she added.

– Well, I'm glad – he nodded.

– And I'm glad that you decided to take Letycja instead of me.

– It was not easy to decide – he began to say.

– But the only right one – she thought.

– We'll have a talk when you're at home, it's not a phone call.

Lea leaned back against the window sill, and after a moment she felt the hand of someone else tighten around her neck, gently. A shiver ran through her whole body. She turned around to see that Samuel was standing behind her, watching her with curiosity.

– Do you want to have a talk with Samuel? – she asked, measuring her gaze with Samuel's.

– Yes, please put him on the phone – her father said.

Lea handed the phone over to Samuel. She walked away from him, taking the opportunity to finish talking, and returned to her room. She lay down on the bed and stared out of the window.

– You have something to tell me, thief? – Samuel said when he came into the room after about five minutes.

– I saved your ass – she chuckled with a roll of her eyes.

– If you're hoping for a thank-you, I think it's too soon – he laughed.

– I see you're enjoying yourself at my expense – she noted, beginning to like that he was laughing so often in front of her – did you get a raise?

– You could call it that – he nodded and opened the window wide to let some fresh air in – at least I got to sleep – he stretched.

– Great.

– And what about you? Haven't you had any sleep at all? – he went over to her and looked into her still bloodshot eyes – I'll get the nurse, maybe she'll give you something to help you sleep.

– There is no need for that – she began, but Samuel left the room. After a while, he came back with a nurse who brought a new drip and injected a sleeping pill into the drip.

Lea didn't know how long it would last, but she fell asleep very quickly. While she was asleep, her room was full of flowers and balloons with wishes for her recovery. A lot of people were worried about her accident and took it as a sign that she would go to the swearing-in ceremony after all. But she didn't go because of the accident, and so her father was able to avoid another scandal that was slowly building up when Lea didn't show up at the ceremony. And yes, at least he had a plausible excuse for the press.

Samuel felt sleepy, so he pulled the ringing cell phone out of his pocket and stepped out into the hallway.

– Hi – he said, taking his brother's phone.

– What's the news? – Ned asked – I heard about what happened, why didn't you call me? – he asked annoyed.

– Because you are on vacation – Samuel said with a shrug of his shoulders.

– I told you that I would not miss the inauguration, by the way, I appeared on the spot and only now I find out what happened. How is she feeling right now?

– I think she is fine, she has a slight concussion.

– I'll be at the hospital soon – Ned sighed heavily at the end of the call.

Samuel returned to the room and in anticipation of Lea waking up he began to read the sheets that were attached to the bouquets. He found this a good pastime and as an excuse as to why he was doing this, in case Lea caught him, he would consider that it was a security measure and to check for anything dangerous. Of course, all the items had to have a security check before they were on their way to the hospital.
