Ned woke up a minute before the alarm, turned it off and showered quietly so as not to wake Lea. Then he went into the kitchen to make himself some sandwiches and called Samuel.
– Why this early? – Samuel moaned on the other end of the telephone.
– I'm going to work soon, it's almost six – Ned replied calmly – get your ass together, you'll sleep on the couch.
– I'll go – Samuel rubbed his eyes and yawned as he got out of bed.
He changed into clean clothes and left the flat. Ned left the door open as he went to brush his teeth.
– You need to behave yourself – he admonished him as he came out of the bathroom. Samuel lay down on the couch in the living room – I don't want to hear about you provoking her, do you have her phone?
Samuel pulled two phones out of his pocket, one for Lea and one for himself, he also put a pocket knife, the keys to his apartment and the hat he always carried. Samuel was tired, he just wanted to go to sleep.
– Do you understand? – Ned asked.
Samuel nodded and yawned. Ned shook his head in pity, he had a bad feeling about leaving the two of them alone, but there was nothing else he could do.
– I'll be back with some food around three o'clock, I'll call you in the meantime to make sure you haven't killed each other, I don't want to put you or Lea on the operating table today.
– My God, relax – Samuel rolled over on his left side and closed his eyes – nothing is going to happen.
Ned went into the bedroom, Lea was asleep, at least it seemed that way to him. He walked over and sat on the edge of the bed, kissed her forehead, then she put her arms around him.
– Don't go – she murmured – don't leave me alone with him.
Ned gave a smile.
– I have no choice – he hugged her – I'm on the phone, there's a phone for you on the living room table. I also found your pocket knife.
– Thank you – she said relieved.
– I'll put the knife away just in case – he laughed – I'd rather not tempt fate. I know you'll be fine, you'll give it a hard time, but not to the point of needing stitches.
Lea also laughed.
– I like your kind of thinking more and more – she admitted.
– I'm glad – he kissed her on the forehead and got out of bed – if something happens, give me a call.
She nodded her head. Ned left the flat, walked to the lift and then to the car. Samuel went to sleep fast, but Lea couldn't get back to sleep. She opened the blinds and let the rising sun shine into the room. On her way to the bathroom, she noticed that Samuel was asleep on the couch. She couldn't resist wanting to tease him about what he'd been doing lately. She showered and got dressed in clean clothes. Lea took the phone Ned had mentioned from the table and put it in her pocket, she didn't find the penknife, Ned must have taken it. She also had a look at Samuel's hat and a plan slowly formed in her head. She put the hat on the floor at about the same height as his head and walked into the kitchen. There was a coffee maker on the counter, she had one just like it in the kitchen of the palace. She remembered that it made a terrible noise when it went into cleaning mode.
She wasn't disappointed when she clicked into the menu to see when Ned had last cleaned it. The date of the last time it was cleaned was a good six months ago. The coffeemaker begged for attention. Lea poured out the water and filled it with fresh water. She placed the jug under the jets and, just to be sure, glanced at Samuel as she pressed the cleaning button. The coffeemaker made a few clicks and the cleaning program began. The machine began to work loudly, like a tractor. It even scared her. Then Lea heard a loud bang in the living room.
