Two years later.
July was pampered with long and warm days, the temperature rose by almost thirty degrees already in the morning hours. When Lea woke up feeling well-rested, the clock showed six o'clock. She had no classes today, so she could easily be in bed by ten. She decided to get out of bed after checking everything on her phone that needed to be checked. She took a bath and changed into a pair of shorts and a top. As she was leaving the room, she ran into Samuel who was on his way to her father's office. Not wanting to be in his way, she stood in the doorway. Lea didn't move, but Samuel stopped to let her pass.
– I have all day, little one – he replied in a calm voice. He started calling her that because he could see it irritated her, but she never told him not to call her that, which convinced him that maybe not all was lost in their relationship full of teasing and annoying escapades.
Lea left the room with a heavy sigh. Samuel followed her, she felt like being beheaded, although she knew she hadn't done anything and shouldn't feel that way. Samuel walked straight ahead as she turned into the kitchen. She sat down at the counter and looked at her hands, which were shaking slightly.
– Is there anything special I can get for you, dear? – the cook asked.
Out of the corner of her eye, Lea saw Franek enter the kitchen. One of the bodyguards had been trying to keep an eye on her ever since Samuel had appeared and she had first run away on his watch.
– I'll take anything you have – she smiled slightly and turned her eyes back to the cook.
She got pancakes with marmalade and tea. She ate quickly, because she had something planned to get done. Today there was to be a meeting regarding the appointment of her father's successor. It was Lea's understanding that her candidacy as the eldest heir was still under consideration. It was her intention to do the classic run away from home, which could be the end result of the rejection of her candidacy. She was finishing her tea when she noticed Samuel appear next to Francis and whisper something in his ear, Francis left and Samuel took his place. Lea straightened and swallowed a pancake.
– Are you going anywhere? – he asked as he sat down next to her, there was something disturbing about the way he looked at her, she felt like he was reading her mind whenever he looked at her.
– Where did you ever get such a ridiculous idea? – she replied with a roll of her eyes, that was exactly what she had been talking about, he was reading her like an open book.
– You don't have classes today, everyone's still in bed.
– I wanted to get up early to see if you weren't fooling around – she got up from the stool with the end of the pancake in her hand.
She saw Samuel raise his eyebrows questioningly and smile, but he resisted the urge to snipe at her and got up as well.
– If you're going to go off the property, I wouldn't recommend it – he added as they walked out of the kitchen.
– Why is that? Is there a lot of traffic?
Samuel shook his head in resignation.
– Because I'll tear your legs out of your ass – he explained in a serious tone.
Her face turned pale at the sound of his words. Samuel walked past her and started to walk down the corridor. Lea knew she didn't have much time, in about twenty minutes a couple of guards would be changing shifts and her only chance of escape would be while the gate was open and the car was almost in front of the door. She made sure that at least two of the guards would see her as she entered her room. She closed the door behind her and opened the window. Her room was on the first floor, but she was already a master of the way down the drainpipe. She jumped down from the drainpipe and ran, hiding herself behind the lush vegetation of the garden. The front gate was open and the security car was in the driveway, as she had expected. She took out the keys to her car, opened the door and started the engine of her car. Making sure that she couldn't see anyone in the vicinity, she screeched her way through the gate. Her rearview mirror showed someone running out of the palace, but she turned toward the highway and lost them.
As soon as she was on the highway, she was in a hurry, she knew she didn't have much time before they would track her down, she wanted to be as far away from home as possible so she wouldn't miss the ceremony that was scheduled for today. She was running out of ideas as to how she was going to let her parents know that she didn't want to be a part of this whole inauguration thing.
She glanced in the rear view mirror and noticed that one of the cars behind her had accelerated to a higher speed. She cursed in her mind that it was her father's security car. Her heart was beating faster and her hands were starting to sweat. Trying to concentrate and think of something, she turned off the radio. A black SUV overtook her and turned on its turn signal to the right, signaling her to pull over to the side of the road. Lea turned on her blinker as well, slowed down, and parked her car behind the security car. There was no point in trying to race her down the highway. She was the first one out of the car, intending to stop the security guards in their car. She walked over to the driver's side door, and the window in the door went down.
– Did you get lost? – Lea asked when she saw Frank behind the wheel. Samuel was in the passenger seat, and she turned even paler when she saw him.
– We have been ordered to transport you to your home – Frank said.
Samuel was sitting quietly, which was not a good sign, because he had a serious look on his face.
– I'm not going anywhere – she said in a tone of confidence – I've already told my father that I won't be part of the ceremony, I'm an adult and I can make my own decisions.
– That's not up for discussion – Samuel said in a sharp tone of voice that did not allow for any argument.
Lea clenched her fists in anger, she had to do something about it. Frank picked up her cell phone that was lying in the glove compartment and held it out to the girl who had deliberately left it at home so that it would be more difficult to track her down. She grabbed the phone and that was when an idea came to her. She grabbed the phone rather clumsily, it slipped out of her hand as she was taking it away from the man, and it fell to the asphalt. She reached for it and pulled the pocket knife out of her pocket that her grandfather had given her once and that she didn't part with most of the time. With all the strength she could muster, she plunged it into the tire and then pulled it out again. She quickly put it back in her pocket and picked up the cell phone.
– We'll follow you – Frank said, unnoticed – get off the highway at the next exit.
