Alexander's pov
I woke up the next morning feeling disoriented and warm, a stark contrast to the cold that had dominated the past few weeks. My groggy mind slowly registered the weight of the blanket covering me and the softness of the body pressed against mine. I glanced down to find Nova nestled beside me on the couch, her hair tousled and her face relaxed in sleep.
Her presence was surprisingly comforting. The night had been filled with an unspoken understanding, a shift from the animosity that had defined our recent interactions. Seeing her like this, vulnerable and at ease, made me realize how much I had missed our interactions-her sharp wit, her sarcasm, and, yes, even her defiant spirit.
I carefully extricated myself from her embrace, not wanting to wake her. As I stood up and stretched, I took a moment to appreciate the calm before the day started. The apartment was quiet, and the morning light filtered softly through the curtains.
I moved to the kitchen and started brewing coffee, hoping that the smell would gently wake Nova. As the aroma filled the apartment, I couldn't help but reflect on how things had changed between us. The intensity of our past interactions seemed to have given way to a more complex but equally compelling connection.
Nova eventually stirred, her eyes fluttering open as she looked around in confusion. She saw me in the kitchen, and a small, sleepy smile crossed her lips.
"Good morning," I said, trying to keep my voice soft. "I made coffee. Thought you might like some."
She stretched and slowly got up from the couch, her movements relaxed despite the roughness of the previous days. "Thanks, Alexander. I didn't expect to wake up to this," she said, glancing at the coffee and then at me.
I nodded, trying to keep things light. "Well, I figured it was the least I could do after monopolizing the couch all night."
She laughed softly, a sound I had missed more than I realized. "You're full of surprises."
We sat down together, sipping our coffee and enjoying the quiet of the morning. The atmosphere was different-calmer, more amicable. It was clear that the night had shifted something between us, and I was curious to see where this new dynamic would lead.
As we talked, the conversation flowed easily, and for the first time in a while, I felt a genuine connection with Nova. It was still unclear what the future held, but for now, I was grateful for this moment of peace and the unexpected comfort it brought.
As Nova sipped her coffee, I took a deep breath, preparing to address the changes I wanted to implement moving forward.
"From now on," I said, my tone firm but not unkind, "if you come to work, you will sit beside or opposite me while you're doing your work. Don't even protest or argue back. I'll be a hawk, making sure you're okay. Do you understand, Missy?"
Nova raised an eyebrow, a smirk tugging at her lips. "Oh, really? And what if I don't want to be under your watchful eye all day?"
"You don't have to want to," I replied, trying to keep my tone light. "It's non-negotiable. I need to make sure you're taking care of yourself. You've been pushing yourself too hard, and I can't let that happen again."
She leaned a little closer, her eyes glinting mischievously. "And what if I find your 'hawk' eyes a bit... distracting? Maybe I'd prefer a little more freedom to, say, tease you without you constantly monitoring my every move."
"Tease me?" I echoed, trying to keep my focus despite her proximity. "I'm not sure that's a good idea, considering how easily you seem to get under my skin."
Nova's smile widened. "Oh, come on. It's not every day I get to flirt with the boss without worrying about getting into trouble. You might just enjoy a little more of my attention."
I couldn't help but chuckle, despite the tension of the moment. "You know, Nova, you're incorrigible."
"And you," she said, her voice dropping to a playful whisper, "seem to enjoy the challenge."
I met her gaze, feeling the heat rise to my cheeks. "That's one way to put it. But remember, this isn't just about fun and games. I genuinely want you to be okay."
Nova's eyes softened, and she reached out to gently touch my arm. "I know. And I appreciate it. But don't think you can completely ignore my playful side. It's a part of who I am."
"I wouldn't dream of it," I said, my voice low. "Just make sure you don't push too hard. We both need to find a balance."
"Deal," she replied, still smiling. "But expect me to keep things interesting. It's just how I roll."
With that, she finished her coffee and leaned back, looking more at ease. It was clear that while there were still boundaries to be set, there was also a mutual respect and an undeniable spark between us. It might take time to navigate the new dynamics, but for now, I was content to enjoy this moment of connection and playfulness.
