I searched through my closet endlessly, nothing felt quite right. I had just left class not too long ago, and believe it or not, I was sleepy. Today had been so tiring that I almost forgot I agreed to go to lunch with a couple of my classmates at 2:30. I huffed, feeling myself grow more frustrated.
KNOCK KNOCK
I heard the door creak open a little, revealing Ari with her blanket wrapped around her small body. I still don't know why she knocks every time she comes into my room.
"Hey mama, what you doing are you okay?" she asked as she made herself comfortable on my bed, she obviously caught on to the look on my face
I sighed a little. "I'm looking for something to wear to lunch. It starts at 2:30, and I'm running late."
"What's wrong with what you have on? You look beautiful like always," she said, letting her eyes roam over me. I blushed a little, quickly turning back to the closet, hoping she didn't see my face.
"Thank you, love, but I don't know... I just feel like it's too much. Do you think it's too much?" I asked, frowning and waiting for her response.
Ari propped herself up on her elbows, her blanket slipping slightly to reveal a playful grin. "Honestly, you always look good. But if you don't feel good in that, then it's too much. You want to feel comfy, right?"
I shuffled through my clothes, feeling more irritated. "Yeah, I guess so. I just want to look cute and be comfortable, you know?"
She nodded, her face showing that she was thinking. "What about that oversized sweater you just bought? Pair it with those cute baggy jeans and some Dunks."
I paused, considering her suggestion. "Mmm, let me try it on and see how it looks."
"Yeah, I like that. I love those jeans so much," she said as I walked out of the closet.
I eyed myself in the mirror, doing a 360 turn before deciding I was finally ready to go.
"Stop looking in the mirror and hurry before you're even later!" Ari got off the bed and walked up to me, messing with my hair a little. I don't know where she got it from, but she started applying lip gloss to my lips, using her thumb to wipe around my mouth.
I giggled, swatting her hand away lightly. "Ari, I'm going to be late!" But I couldn't help admiring how she took her time with me.
"You were going to be late anyways, messing with you," she said stepping back to look at her work. "You look pretty. I almost don't want to let you leave," she mumbled, chuckling a little.
I glanced in the mirror again, and for the first time today, I felt a little pretty. "Okay, I guess this works. I just wanted to feel comfortable. I'm about to head out now," I said, turning toward her and pulling her into a hug.
