9. DISTANT LOOK.
◇◆◇◆◇◆◇◆◇
RICHIE AND EVA STAYED TRUE to their word, picking Kitty up on Saturday morning. To say that Eva was ecstatic about getting to spend more time with her father and Kitty would've been an understatement, the young girl was practically bouncing off of walls for the entire day. Something that warmed Richie's heart immensely.
She would insist on walking in between them, with each of her hands holding their hands. From a distance, the three of them looked like a normal, happy little family. Richie couldn't help himself as he thought about it if they were. Feeling like he was living a too-good-to-be-true dream.
Kitty on the other hand, as much as it warmed her heart, she also couldn't help but think about what life would've been if she had had a kid. If that one fateful day in New York never happened. Would she and Ben have been able to work it out for their child? Would she have become a single mother? Would Ben have fought to keep either one of them in his life?
Richie noticed the far away look in her eyes. The one that she did her best to hide whenever Eva looked her way or spoke to her. Not wanting to ruin the day for the young girl.
After they all spend the day together. Going to the zoo, the park and then to grab some fast food. Richie drove them back to Kitty's apartment, dropping her off there due to fact that Eva was staying around at his for the night.
He parked his car right next to Kitty's and killed the engine. Glancing into the backseats, he smiled to himself when he noticed Eva fast asleep. A gentle smile on her face.
"She's a great kid," Kitty grinned, looking over at the little girl, "You did well, Richie."
He chuckled, "Thanks, Kit."
Kitty shrugged, "Just saying the truth."
"I meant for today," Richie clarified, looking back at the woman in the passenger seat, "It really meant a lot to Eva. And me."
Kitty smiled at him, "Happy to help. Honestly," She looked back over at Eva again.
"Are...Are you okay?"
Kitty glanced at Richie, furrowing her brows, "Yeah, of course."
He didn't look convinced, "You sure? I noticed that distant look in your eyes."
Kitty let out a sigh. Her shoulders shrugging slightly, "I'm okay, just too much thinking, ya know?"
Richie nodded understandingly. He slowly and carefully reached his hand out. Placing it atop of hers which rested on her knee, messing around with a loose thread of her jeans, "I'm here if you ever need to talk, Kit. Remember that, yeah?"
Kitty watched him. Noting nothing but genuineness in his eyes. Watching her carefully. Not wanting to pressure into talking about something she wasn't ready for, but letting her know that he would be there if she ever became ready.
She sent him a small nod, an appreciative smile on her face. She turned her hand upward, letting their palms connect, "Thank you. I mean it, Richie," She said, "I'm here for you too, I know all this must be hard on you," Kitty gestured toward Eva. She couldn't even imagine how hard it was when Richie had to drop off his daughter to her mom's house and then not see her for days if not weeks on end.
He sniffled slightly, "Yeah," He nodded, "But days like this make it worth it. So, thank you, again."
"You don't have to thank me--"
A knock on the passenger side window startled them both. Kitty jumped in her seat whilst Richie pulled his hand out of hers and looked toward the window, ready to jump into action and protect both Kitty and Eva from whoever was outside. Luckily, the two adults settled back down when they realised who was standing outside.
Neil and Ted Fak.
Kitty rolled her eyes but she quickly looked in the backseat, sighing in relief when she saw Eva still fast asleep. She then looked back at Richie, "I better go, before those two idiots get even more impatient," She laughed as she grabbed her bag from the floor.
Richie chuckled, "Yeah. I'll see you later."
She sent him a smile, "Yeah. Tell Eva I had a great day," She added before she reached for the door handle and pushed the door open as quick as she could, managing to hit both Neil and Ted with it, the two brothers not having been able to jump out of the way quick enough.
"Ow!" Neil complained. Rubbing his elbow.
"Shut it," Kitty said and gently closed the door, not wanting to make any noise that woke Eva up. She sent Richie one last smile and a wave before he backed out of the parking lot and she turned around to face her brothers, "What?" She asked, looking between them.
They stood side-by-side. Their arms folded over their chests and large smirks on their faces.
"Were you out on a date?" Ted asked, raising his eyebrow.
"And with Richie!?" Neil added.
Kitty rolled her eyes and pushed past them, hearing them following, "No. It was just a day out."
She didn't spot the unconvinced looks Neil and Ted shared behind her back as she reached her apartment building and fished out her keys.
"You're wearing lipstick," Neil pointed out, snickering quietly to himself.
Kitty rolled her eyes, "So what? Also, what are you two doin' here?" She asked, glancing over her shoulder once she got the apartment building door open.
Ted shrugged, "We just wanted to hang out with our sister, is that a crime?"
"Yeah," Neil nodded, "And you weren't answering your phone, so we came over."
"And now we know why you weren't answering," Ted added, wiggling his eyebrows.
Kitty reached out and pushed his shoulder, "Don't be gross, Eva was with us," She stated before walking into the apartment building, allowing Ted and Neil to follow her inside.
The brothers shared an amused look with one another.
"So, what you're sayin' is that if Eva wasn't with you, then you would've?" Ted snickered.
Kitty rolled her eyes. Her footsteps speeding up, "No, that wasn't what I was saying at all. Now shut it before I kick you out."
She practically ran up the stairs whilst Neil and Ted leisurely walked up them together, laughing hysterically at their sister's reaction.
"Do we need to have the talk with him?" Ted asked, yelling up towards her.
"Shut up!"
