Me and Emma walked into school a lot less enthusiastically today.

We were both aching all over and dreading doing fitness in Combat training.

As we walked into the changing rooms I took some deep breaths, stealing myself to swap my blue, high-waisted shorts for white ones and my pink blouse for a purple polo.

I walked into a cubicle and through the wall, dreading what the hall would look like today.

I was interested to see that it was a massive gym, laid out in a circuit. There were treadmills, bikes, weights and places to do sit-ups and press-ups.

‘GET INTO GROUPS OF FOUR!’ Mr Lee yelled and me, Emma, Hale, and Nolan instantly stepped closer together.

‘YOU,’ he yelled at our group, ‘START ON SIT-UPS,’ we hurriedly ran over and sat down on the mats that were laid out.

‘Let’s see how many sit-ups we can do in a minute,’ I said and everyone nodded.

‘I’ll go first,’ Nolan said, stretching out and getting in position, ‘Some one time me,’

I grabbed a stopwatch and said, ‘3… 2… 1… Go,’ I have to admit Nolan did pretty well. He managed 38 sit-ups in a minute.

‘Step aside, let the pro show you how it’s done.’ Emma said as she started her minute. She even managed to beat her own personal best with 47 sit-ups in just a minute.

Me and Hale attempted it, but kept laughing so gave up when a minute had passed.

‘EVERYONE MOVE CLOCKWISE,’ Mr Lee yelled and I saw Nolan stare longingly at the weights that were next to us in the other direction. I nudged Emma and I saw her concentrate.

‘ACTUALLY, MOVE ANTI-CLOCKWISE,’ Mr Lee yelled and most people groaned. Nolan’s face lit up and he scooped Emma up and swung her around before kissing her. We all grabbed weights and started to throw them. Me and Emma grabbed 2kg dumbbells and started doing squats.

Nolan had picked up and absolutely massive weight and was lifting it with his pinkie finger.

‘Pinkie finger work-out,’ he said when he saw me and Emma staring at him confusedly.

He started throwing the weight around, juggling it with others and me and Emma had to stifle a laugh. We pointed at the weights and Nolan looked up sceptically.

‘Well hey,’ Hale said from where the massive weight was a few seconds ago, ‘I was wondering when you’d notice I was gone,’

Nolan helped Hale down and the two of them burst into peals of laughter as me and Emma returned to our squats.

I was quite exhausted by the end of the session, Emma having challenged me to a shuttle run race after we’d done weights. I won, if I might add, but Emma claimed that was because I hadn’t done the sit-ups properly. After that we’d put in a reasonable amount of effort but no longer competed with ourselves.
