Nolan’s POV

‘NO NO NO!!’ I yelled at Hale. He’d picked up my trophy again and was getting finger prints all over it.

‘Sorry, I forgot…’ Hale whispered, eyes shining slightly.

‘It’s alright mate, never mind,’ I replied, feeling mean for yelling at him. He hasn’t been himself since yesterday lunchtime when Gemma’s relationship status went from ‘single’ to ‘in a relationship’.

I feel so sorry with him, he’s head over heels for this girl and just as he was about to make his move she says yes to someone else.

‘Hey, remember in fitness when Emma and Gem had that shuttle run race? They got so competitive!’ I said, trying to make small talk. Emma gets so competitive when it comes to sports.

‘Nolan…’ Hale groaned, sitting himself down at the table and putting his head in his hands.

‘Hale mate, you can’t go on like this… you need to get used to hearing her name! You’re one of her best friends, you can’t carry on ignoring her for much longer!’ I said, seeing Hale nod slightly, ‘She’ll notice soon, when she stops texting him long enough to look up,’ I muttered as an afterthought.

‘I know, okay? Just give me another day,’ Hale said running his hands through his hair. Emma does that all the time.

‘Sure, just try to be civil to her tomorrow at least? We’re her friends and are supposed to be happy for her!’ I said as I offered him a biscuit from the tin.

‘Thanks,’ he said, taking one. ‘But I – I … I’m not sure I can,’ he muttered.

‘Just try it. If it’s too much turn invisible and meet me in out next class,’ I said, watching Hale raise his head and smile weakly at me.

I can't believe no one else sees the look in his eyes when he looks at Gemma. He’s forbidden me from telling anyone, especially now she's taken, although I think Emma might have noticed.

‘I’ve got to go,’ Hale said, standing up with his phone in his hand, ‘thanks Nolan, I’ll do that tomorrow if I need to. See you!’ he called as he left my house. God I hope he’ll be okay, and soon.
