karina pov.I tap on Yeji's shoulder and promptly shriek as she twists around, "She's right there!" I point at the iconic campus police officer, Officer Shin. This is the first time I've seen her since the last event.
Officer Shin stood at a distance, her hands resting near the gun and taser strapped to her torso. She wore a thick coat, which concealed the muscles usually stressed by her uniform.
A messy bun lets strands of hair slip loose around her face. Black boots untied, the laces whip around as she strolls back and forth, the rugged part of her a guilty attraction of mine.
She was here at the auditorium tonight, guarding the area for some sort of music festival.
She occasionally spoke with her fellow officers, jawline sharper than a knife as it widened. Her alert gaze scanned the surroundings while she took moments to greet guests as they passed by.
God, everybody really does love her.
She's everything I fall for, but the only reason I drove over here was to film a TikTok with her and hop on the trend. I attend the same university where she works, so it was the best of both worlds.
Yeji, my best friend, gasps with personal excitement and squeezes my arm. We both watch her in silence, and then Yeji opens her mouth. "She's so fine," she coos smoothly. "Let's go right now!"
"This is so embarrassing!"
"What does it matter?!" She yanks me toward her. "It's now or never!"
A fire scorches across my face as Officer Shin lays her eyes on us, and I can barely resist Yeji's tug.
Yeji forces me to stay by her side as we come to a stop in front of the officer.
Officer Shin offers us a warm smile, her lips curving gently. "Good evening, ladies."
"Hi!" Yeji responds, licking her lips nervously before casting me a glare. She urges me to speak with a nudge until she speaks first.
"Are you guys here for the show tonight?"
"Oh, no. We... You're..." I blink slowly and hope the words will come back to me.
She pats on the patch on her vest that displays her name. "Officer Shin Ryujin," she reads confidently.
Her cheeky little grin plastered once more, and I almost squealed. She had already found my sensitivity and was messing with it.
"Officer Shin," I mutter. "Oh, so, you're familiar with those TikToks of you, right?"
"Without a doubt." She utters a low chuckle. "Is that what you two are here for?"
Yeji shoves me ridiculously close toward her. "Yes." She pulls out her phone. "Are you, like, super busy right now?"
I accidentally bumped into her chest, and the entire time, all I could think about was how weird she must've thought we were. No respect or boundaries.
But I felt at ease when she extended her arm around me, giving a reassuring tap.
Okay, it's no big deal.
Officer Shin smirks and takes a gander around us, though she didn't really need to with so many other guards keeping an eye on the crowd. After all, we were standing alone, far from the commotion. "No, not as of now."
I subtly motion to sling my arm around her bicep and reach out. "May I...?"
She turns to me, her grin widening as she opens her arm. "Go ahead. Won't get me in trouble."
"It was her idea, by the way," I add, peeking at Yeji, who aligns her phone to video us. My hand lightly squeezes her inner arm, and I instantly notice how solid it feels.
Yeji rolls her eyes. "Jimin over here actually wouldn't stop going on about it..." She pauses for a moment before deciding to continue, "How you were on campus this semester. Honestly, we even started searching for you."
Officer Shin's doe eyes widen as she glances over us. "Is it really that big of a deal? On this TikTok app or whatever?"
"Yes," Yeji replies. "I hope this isn't weird. Now pose for the camera. I'm about to start it."
We stand close together, and I do my best to appear cute despite the nerves busting inside me. Deep down, this is cringey, but maybe the video will blow up and do numbers for my growing account.
Yeji gives the signal she started recording, and for the first try, we pull it off like that. Officer Shin's role is to do nothing—meaning stand there and look fine—as I teasingly mouth the words, "Everybody knows that I'm a good girl, officer."
I couldn't wipe the smile off my face or stop fidgeting—I was shitting bricks. With both hands still gripping her arm, Yeji ends the clip, cheering with a winning smile.
"Yes, it came out so good!"
"Really?" I jump over to Yeji, snatching her phone to watch the video myself. I made sure I looked at least decent and that the lighting was perfect; I didn't want to waste Officer Shin's time. Of course, she effortlessly looked amazing.
"Yeah!"
Meanwhile, Yeji chats with Officer Shin. "Thank you for your time," she says politely.
I glance up at Officer Shin, excitement swooshing around in my stomach. "This really looks good..."
"No problem," she replies and checks the time. "Stay safe out there, alright?" She nods upright and retrieves a beanie from her backpack to wrap around her head.
"Thank you. Have a good night!" Yeji skips away to the car as she hums with satisfaction.
I'm caught in the silent stare between us, as if a thread restricted me so I'd look at her one last time. She flipped a part of her lip with her teeth to nip it, fixated on my expression. Then, her gaze landed on my legs, and that was when people began to leave the auditorium.
I react to the sound of Yeji's voice calling me, "Jimin, come on!"
I shake my head and turn back to Officer Shin to wave goodbye, but she's no longer there. I silently hope I cross paths with her again.
