I shut the sirens off, scowling at the blazing flames still spreading and right on their way to consume the entire sorority house. It seems to have started in the encompassing bushes before reaching the house.

There was no one inside.

With the firemen on their way, I use the time to piece together how it might have started. Just as I'm about to step outside to consult the spectators passing by from a car, I catch sight of a girl.

"Excuse me, ma'am?"

This girl, or rather, woman stood strangely in a nightgown, her arms crossed as she admired the fire. It was chilly tonight, but the heat radiating from the inferno must've balanced it out for her.

Her long, dark brown hair dripped past her shoulders, her bare face fresh as if she'd just brushed her hair and stepped outside.

She turns to me, her eyebrows raised. "Yes?"

"What are you doing here?" I throw off my thick jacket and drape it over her slouched shoulders. "Did you see anything?"

"I don't know, Officer," she replies, rotating back to the fire with a little smirk etched across her face.

I squint, trying to make out if there's something in her fist as she grips the linen. "Is that right?"

"Well, duh, I'm not a liar." She cups her hands together, swaying slightly as she steps closer, her eyes sticking to my belt.

"Come over here." I put an arm around her back and direct to my car, at a safe distance from the fire. She rests against my door as I briefly interrogate her. "Is there something you need to tell me?"

"Why?"

"You're acting strange."

"When I arrived, it was already burning."

Without hesitation, I grab her wrists and press her firmly against the cold metal of the car. "Explain to me your presence." I cuff her wrists and lean in to see the side of her face.

"Hey!" The woman resists and attempts to rock against me. "Do you really need to put these on?" she objects, wiggling her wrists. "Detaining me... for what?" Her eyes lock onto mine, and for once, time stops.

The crackling, raging flames is the only sound between us, so I don't understand what's being spoken inside of us.

She gulps, and her eyes soften, the aggression in her gaze fading. I feel her hips tilt and collide with mine, passion burning in her eyes. "Open the door."

"No." I glance down at her fists. "Open these."

"I have nothing..." She resists again, but I force them open, only to find nothing.

"The fuck..." I'm more suspicious the more I glare at her. I know I'm not overreacting—there's something off about her. Without waiting for permission, I decide to search her and start off with her waist.

My fingers sunk into her hips and eventually trailed off down her sides to her thick legs. I must've plunged my fingers too far because she lets out a sly comment, "I don't feel a ring on your finger."

Her dirty tone dares me to react, but I simply cock an eyebrow, expression dry, and slowly continue to run my palm along her inner thighs.

"Do you have a girl?"

"No, and we're not worried about that right now." I lift myself off my knees and wrap my arms towards her chest. "What are you trying to say?"

I saw the fire tower over us in the reflection of her wondrous eyes that seemed to dilate.
