Title: Beneath the Surface

---

Morning came too soon.

The soft light filtered through the curtains of Jisung’s penthouse, casting a muted glow across the room. Seungmin stirred, slowly coming back to consciousness, his body heavy with the weight of sleep. For a moment, he forgot where he was—the warmth, the unfamiliar feeling of someone else beside him—it all felt foreign. But then the events of the night before came rushing back.

He was still in Jisung’s bed.

Seungmin’s eyes fluttered open, his heart quickening with the realization. He didn’t move, didn’t turn to see if Jisung was still there, as though staying still might somehow undo everything that had happened. His mind raced, cataloging the growing complexity of their already tangled relationship. They’d crossed a line, and now he had no idea where they stood.

After a few moments, he felt movement behind him—a subtle shift as Jisung stretched, the bed creaking softly under his weight. Seungmin’s body tensed, waiting for Jisung to say something, to throw one of his usual taunts or offer some offhand comment that would return things to normal.

But instead, Jisung remained silent.

Seungmin finally turned, propping himself up on one elbow to look at him. Jisung was sitting up, his back resting against the headboard, his gaze fixed on some distant point beyond the window. He looked different in the morning light—softer, less guarded. It was a side of him Seungmin had never seen before, and it made the tight knot in his chest twist even further.

Seungmin cleared his throat, trying to break the silence without shattering whatever fragile peace still hung between them. “I should get going.”

Jisung’s eyes flickered toward him, but his expression remained unreadable. For a moment, it seemed like he might argue, but then he simply nodded, his gaze returning to the window. “Yeah. You probably should.”

The words stung, more than Seungmin had expected. He wasn’t sure what he’d wanted Jisung to say, but hearing the cold, indifferent tone reminded him of their usual dynamic. And yet, something felt off. The way Jisung’s shoulders sagged just slightly, the way his fingers drummed absently against the sheets—it was subtle, but Seungmin noticed.

Jisung was holding something back.

Seungmin hesitated, caught between the desire to ask what was really going on and the overwhelming urge to just leave and put distance between them. He sat up, running a hand through his tousled hair before swinging his legs over the edge of the bed. “Last night…” he began, his voice trailing off as he searched for the right words. But nothing came out the way he wanted.

Jisung’s voice was quiet when he spoke. “You don’t have to explain anything.”

Seungmin’s heart skipped a beat. He turned to look at Jisung again, searching his face for any sign of the usual arrogance, the biting sarcasm that normally coated his words. But Jisung wasn’t smirking. He wasn’t wearing his usual mask of indifference. Instead, he looked tired, almost resigned.

Seungmin opened his mouth to say something—to push back, to ask the questions that had been swirling in his mind since last night—but the words wouldn’t come. He wasn’t ready to confront whatever was happening between them, not yet. And judging by the way Jisung had withdrawn into himself, neither was he.

With a sigh, Seungmin stood up, gathering his clothes from the floor. The room felt colder without the warmth of Jisung’s presence beside him, and Seungmin hated how aware he was of that fact.

He dressed quickly, his movements stiff and mechanical, as though rushing through the motions could somehow erase the night before. But when he reached for the door, he paused, his hand hovering over the handle.

He didn’t turn to face Jisung as he spoke. “I’ll see you at the merger meeting next week.”

It wasn’t a question. It was a statement—an attempt to return to their normal roles, to remind himself that they were rivals first and foremost. The line had been crossed, but Seungmin was determined to act like it hadn’t.

“Yeah,” Jisung’s voice was quiet, almost distracted. “See you there.”

Seungmin’s hand tightened on the door handle, his chest tight with unspoken words. For a brief moment, he considered turning around—saying something, anything, that might ease the tension between them. But in the end, he couldn’t bring himself to do it.

Without another word, Seungmin opened the door and stepped out, leaving the quiet of Jisung’s penthouse behind.

---

The following week flew by in a blur of meetings, phone calls, and business negotiations. Seungmin buried himself in work, refusing to let his mind linger on Jisung or the strange turn their relationship had taken. Every time his thoughts wandered back to that night, he shoved them down, telling himself that it didn’t matter.

But the truth was, he couldn’t stop thinking about it.

When the day of the merger meeting arrived, Seungmin found himself standing outside the boardroom, his heart racing in a way that had nothing to do with business. He hadn’t seen Jisung since that morning in his penthouse, and the anticipation of their next interaction had left him on edge.

Taking a deep breath, Seungmin pushed open the door and stepped inside.

Jisung was already there, seated at the head of the table, his posture relaxed but his eyes sharp as they flickered toward Seungmin. For a moment, their gazes locked, and Seungmin felt the air between them crackle with unspoken tension. It was as if no time had passed at all, but everything had changed.

Seungmin took his seat at the opposite end of the table, his expression carefully neutral. The rest of the board members filtered in, exchanging polite greetings and small talk, but Seungmin barely registered any of it. His focus was on Jisung—the way his fingers tapped against the table, the way his gaze seemed to linger on Seungmin just a little too long.

As the meeting began, the room buzzed with discussion, but beneath the surface, the tension between Seungmin and Jisung hummed like a live wire. Every glance, every subtle movement, felt charged with the weight of what had happened between them. And no matter how hard Seungmin tried to focus on the merger, his mind kept drifting back to the night they’d spent together.

He could feel it—the fragile balance they’d maintained for so long was beginning to unravel.

And he had no idea how to stop it.
