Brook
It's a beautiful spring morning. The air is filled with the scent of flowers and fresh air as I roll out of bed. My room is cold- probably because I left my window open so I could see the flowers blooming and hear the birds chirping in the morning.
It's a new day.
It's the Friday before spring break.
My last spring break ever.
I get up- and get ready. I find Steve in the bathroom brushing his teeth with his work uniform on. He looks over and nods his head at me. His hair slightly bouncing as he spits out the toothpaste. "Any plans for tonight?"
"Uh there's a basketball tournament tonight. If we win- we win championship. So I'm going to support Jason and the boys. You?" I say as I pick up my toothbrush and wet it.
He runs his hands through his fingers. "Right. I almost forgot. I have a date and we are going to it too."
I pull the toothbrush out, "Wait. You're taking a date to the high school game?"
He glares at me, "What else am I suppose to do tonight?"
I shrug my shoulders and keep brushing my teeth. Steve leans his back against the counter and waits for me to finish brushing my teeth. He fixes his name tag. "Hurry up. I got to go pick up Robin."
"What I was going to go say is to maybe take this girl to dinner or something?" I offer my unsolicited advice.
"Geesh- you think I didn't think of that?" He says with sarcasm dripping from his voice with a matching eye roll. He walks out of the room. "After the game that's what we are doing. Okay, I'm leaving now. See you later sis."
I start brushing the knots out of my hair. "Bye Stevie."
I hear him groan as he closes his bedroom door and hear his feet pound down the stairs. Then I hear him yell at Mom about not getting breakfast, then I hear the front door slam close.
Mom walks up the stairs and comes into my bedroom then looks in the bathroom. "Your brother is something else." She smiles.
"Oh I know. You birthed him." I smile and she walks in and pulls me in for a hug. "I think he's nervous. He has a date tonight."
She pulls back, "Another one?" She rolls her green eyes that match mine. "Same girl or different one?"
I laugh, "When has Steve go on a date with the same girl twice?"
She laughs. "Nancy."
"True." I put my brush down and walk out into my dark green bedroom, and make my bed. The grey sheets asking me to come back to bed. "Aren't you and Dad leaving tonight for a trip?"
Mom leans against the bathroom door frame. She doesn't say anything at first but watches me go in and out of my closet a few times. Trying to figure out what to wear. I decide on my usual. A green skirt with dark colored panty house since there's a massive pep rally at school for this game and a cream colored sweater. I put my half wavy hair into a high pony tail with a green scrunchie that matches the skirt. Then I slip on a pair of white vans all as Mom still hasn't said anything.
