Episode Two, Part 5:
Young Blood
When the open gates of Basilisk came into sight again, Veer could have sworn she had never felt so much relief. Her fading adrenaline lasted just long enough for her to reach doors of the Quarters, failing to notice all the whispers and conversation between the guards that broke out upon her return to camp.
Veer pushed open the doors and hurried inside, barely having a moment to think about finding her fellow Sovereigns before she noticed the sore sight in front of her.
Atlas was sitting on one of the couches with his head in his hands, and their Mom and Dad on either side of him; Wynn was sitting on the coffee table right in front, seemingly trying to offer comfort to all three of them at once, and Eden was in the corner of the room talking to Sol and Reign, biting on her nails between every other sentence and pacing along the small counter next to them.
"...What's happened?" Veer asked, trying to figure out who that she loved wasn't in the room, but that still left an awfully large amount of people that could have been in trouble.
Everyone's attention snapped over to her and as every conversation fell silent, Veer found herself smothered between both of her parents.
"M-Mom? Dad?" She stuttered, trying to pry herself away. "What's wrong? Did something happen? Is it Atlas?"
"What?" Quill exclaimed, struggling to get his words out amid his own confusion. "Veer, we... We thought something had happened to you."
Veer looked up at her Dad, then to her Mom, then one by one, everyone else in the room.
"I was just out on a mission," she said, hating the tension in the room, suddenly feeling like a disobedient child getting told off. "The others knew where I was. We talked about it last night?" She looked over at Eden for confirmation, seeing Sol on the radio behind her, no doubt trying to get in contact with everyone else that wasn't in the room.
"No one could get in contact with you," Eden explained. "And Atlas said you left camp around five in the morning, and it's already nearly evening... We thought you got hurt. Izzy and Harlow are out there with a few teams trying to find you."
"My radio wasn't working," Veer said, feeling tears well in her eyes as guilt swarmed all around her. She blinked it away and moved over to Atlas who was still on the couch, appearing too nauseous to bring himself to stand. She wrapped her arms around him as he tried to let out the last of his tears, only to find that more were still coming to him as an act of relief.
"I did try radioing," Veer promised. "And I knew I should have come back when I realised it wasn't working, but I was getting a lot of answers to... To something we needed answers for," she said, trying to be as brief as possible, but it was no use.
"Answers to what?" Wynn asked, starting to feel concerned.
Veer glanced over at Eden, not knowing what to say.
"Dad, it's fine," she told him. "We've been out of camp hundreds of times and we know what we're doing. And... And we're the Sovereigns now. You have to let us make decisions, whether or not you're okay with them."
Wynn couldn't hide the unease on his face; it wasn't that his daughter was using her voice or not-so-subtly reminding him that he wasn't the one in authority anymore, but it was the fact that he knew there was something she wasn't telling him - something she clearly wanted to get out - that was making him anxious. Though he wanted to push Eden for an answer, given how high emotions had been in Veer's absence, he knew it wasn't the right time.
