Episode One, Part 2:
RenascenceThe overgrown fire pit in the centre of camp was roaring with a flame large enough to light up all of Basilisk. The chorus of drums was intensified by consistent off-beats as the children of camp joined in the festivities, all ecstatic to be up past nightfall.
Wherever Izzy walked, a new group of people congratulated her on becoming Noble, and despite having thought she knew most of the people within camp, Izzy found that there were a lot more people who knew her name than she could name back.
Someone grabbed onto her arm, hurrying to turn her around. As she maintained her composure and fought through her tiredness to keep her pleasant smile on show, Izzy felt relief wash over her when she realized it was just her sisters.
"Hey, you guys!" Izzy beamed, reaching down to her youngest sister, Hope, and lifting her up. Though she was six, she was small enough to rest comfortably on Izzy's hip, and did so gladly. Her little arms wrapped around Izzy, refusing to admit how tired she was from staying up late, despite the yawn she tried to disguise as she leaned into the crook of Izzy's neck.
"All this is for you?" Story asked, gazing around in every direction with awe in her eyes. She was often careful and reserved - a perfectionist at heart, always trying her hardest to make sure everyone around her was cared for before she thought of herself - but she couldn't help but get distracted by everything that was going on, nor hide the excitement plastered over her face.
"For Harlow, and Eden, and Veer, too. Not just me."
"But mostly you. You're the Noble - that's what dad said!" Hope exclaimed, a little too loudly for Izzy's liking. But she laughed anyway and brushed Hope's hair out of her face, distracted by her own adoration of Hope's tired features. "I guess I am the Noble... But it still doesn't feel real yet."
"That means that you're in charge... Of everyone," Story clarified.
"Yep. Even you."
Izzy pushed on Story's arm in amusement; she had a similar reaction to when the same had been pointed out to Ares, and it was every bit as enjoyable to Izzy as it had been the first time.
"So dad's not in charge anymore. Or Uncle Wynn, Auntie Riv, or Auntie Dreea. That's kind of cool."
"Cool and terrifying," Izzy said.
"If you're the Sovereign now, can you tell Mom and Dad that I'm allowed to stay up late every night?"
Izzy and Story laughed in unison at their sister as she was set on the ground.
"Mom and Dad are still the boss of us," Story told her. "I doubt even Izzy has the power over their rules."
"I think Story's right. And I think you're ready for bed," she agreed, tilting Hope's face up towards her and softly pinching the bridge of her nose as the young girl scrunched her face up.
"Hey! There you are. I've been looking all over for you."
All three girls turned around to see who was speaking, quickly spotting Harlow as he made his way over through the crowd of people.
"Harlow!" Hope exclaimed, unable to get a word out before he had picked her up and was spinning her around in the air. She giggled as she reached the ground, leaning against Izzy as Harlow crouched down to her height.
"Did you hear? Izzy's a Sovereign! Just like our dad!"
"I did hear!" Harlow matched her enthusiasm. "And you know what else?"
