I started writing this book sometime in late April of this year. About halfway through - on a Wednesday in May - one of my closest friends passed away suddenly.
For the past five months, I have been struggling tremendously with the grief for him, as well as numerous other battles that have been thrown my way this year. Though it has taken me some time to get this story out, I've found that writing through my feelings has helped me to put a lot of them into words and make sense of what I was struggling to otherwise say.
A lot of the lines from my characters have really hit home, but it has been a comfort to feel them be said and read them back to myself. I like to believe that one day, they might help someone else feeling the same way, or offer words to describe something that you previously couldn't manage.
And I hope that a lot of those words are something that could have really helped my friend, Andy, when he was struggling.
So, I'd like to dedicate this book to him (and the next one in this series), because even though he couldn't see a way out his darkness, it didn't mean that there wasn't light to be found - just like what this story, and it's ending, are constantly trying to remind us.
There's a very important line in this book (spoiler alert (but also, not really)) that I'll leave here.
"There's bravery in saving someone.
And one day, I'll be brave in that way."This is for you, Andy.
You're in everything I do.
