“You know what Siobhan? Forget it. I don’t know why I even bothered. Have fun with your husband.”
“Viv- Viv don’t open that do-” A scream rang out, hitting Siobhan’s ears like a clashing cymbal. “VIVIAN!!”
**
‘Always do your best to please your husband’ Siobhan would hear her mother say in the back of her mind every time that Roger would come home from work. It was always the same routine; the door would slam, shoes would fly across the room followed by some sort of angry grumbling. Heavy footsteps would hit against the wood of the stairs, each one causing Siobhan to jolt in her sitting position on the end of their bed. Every day she was expected to be ready to be his willing play thing, feigning enjoyment while Roger released more than just his frustrations from work into her. She had become accustomed to playing the part, ignoring the emotions, being the woman who pleased.
Today should have been no different, she had expected to lay under his weight and take the brunt of all the phone calls, the manager meetings, the angry emails from parents- with every thrust of her back further and further into the bed she willed herself to fall through the frame, simply fall into the darkness of the underground. But instead, Roger came bursting through the door already stumbling. Siobhan had been so tense waiting for him, she hadn’t noticed that he was more than an hour late. Roger was stumbling around the room, mumbling something about ‘those damn redheaded bitches’. Siobhan hadn’t even noticed that her nails were digging into her own skin as she maintained her dainty seated pose. She could no longer feel her fingers, the grip strength she placed on herself was the only thing that kept her sane as she waited for Roger to inevitably strike. She felt like a doll, stuck in a body that was not her own- simply belonging to the angry man that was storming around her bedroom. He began to toss things around with increasing annoyance, each thump to the floor decreasing the sanity of the blonde glued to the edge of a mattress stuffed with secrets.
“No god damn respect. Not a shred of it. My own children- Siobhan! My own damn children!” Roger spoke as though Siobhan had been present for whatever had sent him down this spiral. She could simply nod, attentively listening to the rambles of a lunatic. “They think they can take over the nursery- MY nursery!” Roger turned his body in the direction of Siobhan, throwing a box from her vanity in her direction. She reacted quickly, moving her body out of the way of the object. Instantly she knew her mistake, but she had no time to consider the damage before Roger was doing it for her. In the blink of an eye his body towered over her- a sight that frequented her nightmares. She forced a sharp inhale, a desperate attempt to fill her lungs with air before Roger could get his hands around her throat. It seemed all in vain, as Roger cut off her air supply quickly with his own two hands. “How the hell am I supposed to operate when those ungrateful children keep shoving their noses where they don’t belong?” He lifted her throat up, stretching her skin tightly under his fingers. Siobhan pressed her lips together praying she could keep her body from reacting. If he saw, he would react. She couldn’t risk another bruise- another lie. Roger scoffed, throwing Siobhan’s body back onto the bed. “Get undressed.” She could feel herself blinking away the dots in her vision, trying to come back to reality for a single moment before it would undoubtedly be ripped away again. She propped herself up on her elbows to reach down with shaking hands for her gold plated belt. But just as she grazed the cool metal with her fingertips, she heard her cell phone ping. She turned her head just enough to see the screen light up with a white and blue pinstripe pattern.
Vivian...
That thought alone was all she could hold to, as she laid on the bed- yet again willing herself to disappear into the sheets, fall through the floor and melt away from all of this... away from Roger. Maybe- just maybe... She could fall into Vivian’s arms instead. A single tear fell from her eyes, landing on the edge of a small smile. Even through all of this- every painful step of it all...
