She had looked away for a second, a single solitary second. There was no time for Jamie to even get onto the table let alone fall off of it. Siobhan was sure she would never be allowed near Jamie again, that Vivian would ask her to kindly take her destructive aura that clearly followed her around and leave. Everything in her life was like this, perfect right up until it wasn’t anymore. She ruined everything she touched, why should this be any different? She could see Vivian through the glass in the door of the room that Jamie had been taken back to. She didn’t look concerned, but what would Siobhan know about motherly concern? She clearly had lost the ability to even supervise children. Maybe Roger was right, she really was only good for her body.
Siobhan was so lost in thought she almost didn’t hear the door open in the midst of her downward spiral. Vivian snuck out the door, her lips pressed together tightly as she quietly shut it behind her. Siobhan quickly turned to face her, panic sprawling across her face. Vivian crossed her arms across her chest as she walked up to Siobhan.
“Oh my god, Viv. What did they say? Is Jamie okay? Did I get him here soon enough? What did he break? Did he break anything? I will help pay for his bills, I promise.” Siobhan felt the word vomit tumble out of her mouth at rapid speed. Vivian stayed stone face as Siobhan rambled on, her arms pulled tightly to her chest. “Please, dear God- say something.” Vivian couldn’t hold back the smile any longer that was pulling at the corner of her lips.
“He has a tiny bruise, Siobhan. He’s totally fine.” Siobhan’s jaw dropped. Vivian covered her mouth to stifle the laugh that she was holding in. “I am thankful that you were so worried that you brought him here, he could have been hurt a lot worse but- he’s okay. We can take him home in an hour.” Siobhan ran through the stages of grief on her face in what seemed like simultaneous motion.
“You let me think I severely injured your son!” She screeched out, reaching forward to smack Vivian’s arm lightly.
“I let you know what it feels like to be a parent. You never stop worrying about your kids, even when the minimal damage things happen. Hell, even when nothing happens.” Siobhan pondered that sentence for a moment, she really had just loaded Jamie up in her car, carseat be damned- just to make sure he would be okay. Was that parenting? Constant worry, accidents left and right, bumps, bruises- everything awful? Or was it all of that and so much more? All of the bad mixed with every ounce of good that exists in the world..?
“I feel horrible, Viv.” Vivian smiled softly, tilting her head towards the anxious blonde. After a moment she stepped forward and pulled Siobhan into a hug. She held her head close to her chest, letting Siobhan be lulled by the sound of her heartbeat.
“You don’t need to. He’s okay. I’m okay-” She pulled back to hold Siobhan by the shoulders. “-we are okay.” Siobhan felt tears welling up in her eyes as Vivian effortlessly soothed her fears. There was never an ulterior motive behind Vivian’s caring eyes. She truly only cared about what was best for Siobhan, and making sure she never took blame for things that were not hers to take.
“You said an hour- am I taking him home? If so- I need your booster seat...” Vivian snorted, covering her mouth quickly.
“No, we are taking him home in an hour, it’s a slow day. I only picked up one exotic disease.” Siobhan rolled her eyes, shouldering into Vivian’s side.
“Very funny, Viv.”
“It’s serious Bon-Bon! I didn’t even meet the quota! I should have gotten at least three by now!”**
Jamie was asleep by the time that Vivian pulled the car into the car park of her complex. She glanced in the mirror at her son, peacefully unaware that he had given the blonde in the front seat of the car a heart attack earlier that day. The sun was setting, casting a beautiful warm glow onto Siobhan’s face. Vivian couldn’t help but smile at the sight, there was never a moment where she didn’t find Siobhan to be the most beautiful woman.
“Do you think you could grab my work bag, I’ll carry him in and get him laid down.” Vivian reached for her door handle with a smile.
“Of course.” Siobhan sighed contently, the slice of life mundane was beautiful. If it weren’t for the medical band on Jamie’s tiny wrist, this moment would have felt like a perfect dream- pulling up to their home, their son in the back seat... would it ever truly be that?
