Nine Years Ago...

The quiet night was broken by the piercing screams of a young girl. Nine-year-old Saori jolted upright in her bed, tangled in her sheets, her heart racing wildly. The dim light from the lamp in the corner cast long shadows across the room, making the familiar space feel foreign and menacing.

Satoru, who had been sleeping on the tatami mat below her bed, bolted upright, instantly alert. The soft rustle of his blanket barely masked the urgency in his voice as he scrambled to her side.

Satoru rushed to her and wrapped his arms around her: Saori, calm down. It's okay. It was just a nightmare; it's not real.

Saori buried her face in his shoulder, the fabric of his shirt soaking up her tears. She trembled, her small body racked with sobs.

Saori between gasps: But it felt so real! I could feel everything that was happening...

Satoru gently pulled back to look into her tear-filled eyes, his expression softening. He brushed a strand of hair from her face, noticing how the shadows danced across her features.

Satoru spoke softly: What did you dream about? Can you tell me?

Saori hesitated, her voice barely a whisper as she recalled the vivid images.

Saori: I dreamt that you were fighting a bad guy... and you lost. Then you... died. It felt so real.

His heart ached at her words, a knot tightening in his chest. Satoru quickly shook his head, attempting to dispel the darkness that had crept into her mind.

Satoru held her closer, his voice steady: Saori, listen to me. It was just a dream. You don't have to worry about me. I'm the strongest, remember? Nothing can kill me.

Saori's eyes searched his, seeking reassurance in his confident smile. But doubt lingered in her mind like a shadow.

Saori voice trembling: You promise? That you'll never die?

He felt the weight of her words, the innocent fear behind them. Satoru took a deep breath, his resolve firming as he locked eyes with her.

Satoru: with sincerity: I promise. I will never die. I'll be in your life for as long as you need me to be.

The room felt warmer as he spoke, the flickering light casting a soft glow around them. Saori nodded, a small spark of hope igniting in her heart.

She snuggled closer to him, feeling safe within his embrace, the world outside their window growing quiet again. The gentle sounds of the night, the distant chirping of crickets, seemed to cradle her back to a sense of security. Satoru remained by her side, a steadfast guardian in the dark.

Saori softly, as sleep began to reclaim her: Promise you'll always be there.

Satoru smiled gently: I promise, little sister. Always.

As Saori drifted back to sleep, the weight of her nightmares slowly lifted, leaving her nestled in the warmth of his promise, the shadows retreating back into the corners of the room.

20th December 2018

Saori stood in the small living room, her heart pounding as she paced back and forth, phone pressed tightly against her ear. The holiday decorations twinkled around her, yet the festive atmosphere felt hollow without her brother by her side.

Saori voice trembling: What do you mean you can't make it again this year? You said that last year as well, Onii-chan!

Across the line, Satoru sighed, a weight heavy in his voice.
