CHAPTER FIVE -  A CHAT BETWEEN FRIENDS

“You’re extremely quiet.” Armand stated in a teasing manner, pulling me away from my thoughts, as I turned from looking out the window of my study.

Immortals, with time turned cold.  The older and lonelier they became, the more aggressive they got.  Food loosing its taste, life loosing its color.  And only with the love of a mate, did these things return.  It was the way the life made us search for one another.  Making it a necessity to live.

At a thousand and eighty two, I had finally found my mate.   The one woman who would make me feel again.  Love.  A dentist, that went by the name of Melanie.  Who couldn’t even grasp the idea that immortals existed.   So how in the world was I going to convince her that she’d been made for me?

“What do you think?” I asked Armand, staring at the photograph of her, the one that I’d stolen from her office.

“Truth be told.  I am jealous.” Armand confessed.  “She is beautiful, smart and strong.  Just like my Julianna.”

“So you approve of her then?” I asked, smiling up at my best friend.  Feeling a bit sorry for him, as I remembered the cruel way he had lost his mate.

“I do.” he stated sincerely.   “But I must warn you.  It wont be easy.  The man in the photo is her fiancé.  They are getting married in a little less than two weeks.” Armand stated.

“Her Fiancé?” I asked completely surprised.  Unprepared for news like that.  “It can’t be.”

“I could read her mind, remember?”

That was the first and most important trait in a mate.  The ability to keep their thoughts guarded from their lover.  Making it impossible for one to control the other.

“What can you tell me?” I asked, clearly concerned, desperately wanted to know more of my mated.

“Well… from the bits of information I was able to gather from her mind.  She feels duty bound to marry him.  Not a love match.  She’s actually afraid of him.”

“Afraid of him?” I asked, worried, standing from my chair and pacing my office.   “I need to find her.”

“My friend.  Even in her mind there are some things that don’t add up.  I sensed that he is a very powerful mortal.  An evil mortal.”

“So?  For God sakes, I am an immortal.  I don’t fear him.” I stated in a growl.

“It’s not you who I am worried about.” Armand stated honestly, walking to the door.  “Give it a night of thought.  Tomorrow I will stand by your decision, which ever it may be.”  he added exiting the study, leaving me alone to think.

Sitting on my chair, I reflected on  Armand’s words…  If she feared her fiancé and had her doubts about him, the person who she shared her life with, it meant that he was someone you could not fool around with.  Armand stated something about him being powerful and evil.  Just what kind of man was her fiancé?

We vampires were stronger, faster but were forced to live in secrecy.   A wrong miscalculation on our part would bring yet another war against us.  We were already at the verge of extinction and we couldn’t withstand another war with our low numbers.

Pulling my thoughts back to her, I realized that she would probably fear the whole male species.  Making it nearly impossible for her to trust me or any other.

Turning my chair around, I began to look out the window again.  Smiling at the fool moon.  “Melanie.  I swear on my life, that I would gain your trust and most important, your love.”
