CHAPTER THIRTY TWO

“I’m sorry I took so long.” I apologized, pulling her away from me to look into her eyes.  “I’m sorry for ever letting you out of my sight.” I then whispered, emotions making my throat close up.  “For letting you go.” I added against her lips.  Giving her a gentle kiss.  Pouring my heart into it.  Letting her know just how much I missed her.

“You’re here now.” Melanie stated, resting her head on my chest when I pulled away, not loosening her grip on me.

Placing my chin over Melanie’s head as I couldn‘t bring myself to part from her just yet, I saw Armand turn to Dagan, a puzzled expression in his face.   An expression that quickly turned to fear as the young woman came to stand beside Dagan.

Without a word to me or Dagan, Armand literally ran out of the room.  Leaving us all staring after him.

“He can’t read Sally.” Dagan stated amused, the young girl following in his trail, deep in a trance.

“He can’t?” I asked, unable to believe that’d been the reason he’d run.  “That Son of a Bitch.  He’s afraid of finding another mate.” I stated, both Dagan and I laughing.

“Can we go? I’m starving.” Melanie confessed, stealing glances at Sally’s wounds.

“Yes.” I said signaling Dagan to go first.

“Did you get him?  Did you get Zack?” Melanie asked concerned once we began to walk.

“No.  Not yet.  But I promise I will.”

“How about Michael? Did you find him?” Melanie asked concerned, looking up at me with fright.

“No.  The whole building was empty by the time we found it.”  I said taking out a small syringe.

Spotting the syringe in my hands, Melanie instantly stopped walking and moved from me.  Shock and surprise registering in her face.

“I just wanna help.  This will put you to sleep.  It wont bring you harm.”

“How do I know if I could trust you?” Melanie asked, while her body began to shiver uncontrollable.  “What if you are another hallucination?” she asked before fainting into the ground.

Pulling her eagerly to me, I felt her temperature rising.  Blood pouring out of her eyes, ears nose.  Not a very good sign when a person was a new turn.  It meant that her body was still fighting off the Nanos.

“Its me.” I said against her lips, gently kissing her as I slowly injecting the syringe into her neck.

Melanie’s POV

Opening my eyes, I was surprised and relieved to find myself in Erick’s old room.  It had all been a terrible dream.  And like every other time I arose from sleep, I found Erick sitting dutifully on his desk, papers on his hands.

“This is a sight I will never get bored to see.” I stated smiling at him as I stretched on the bed.

Doing so, I felt something tugging at my arm.  Searching for the source I found that an IV had been placed on my arm.  An empty bag of blood hanging on the side of the bed posts.

Not expecting to find that there, I stared at it in surprise.

“As a new turn.  You need twice the intake of blood.” Erick stated sincerely, standing from his chair and coming to sit by me.

“A new turn.  It wasn’t a dream?” I asked, tears already trying to make their way down my face.

“I’m afraid not.” Erick told me, sitting on the bed and pulling me to him in a hug.

“But… but….  I’m not an Immortal.  I’m not like you.” I said gripping on to him.  “I’m a monster.”

“No you are not.  Your Melanie.  The dentist I fell in love with.” Erick stated, kissing my forehead.

Silence fell upon us, as I tried to digest all of this.  My life had completely changed and I hadn’t been able to do a damn thing about it.

“Zack told me that I wouldn’t be able to feed like an Immortal” I stated confused.  “That I don’t have….”

“He told you the truth.  Without your fangs, you can only feed of bagged blood.”

“Then his plan of making me like you didn’t work?” I asked, a bit relieved to know that I wouldn’t be killing anyone in the near future.  “I could feed of bagged blood.”

    “Yes.”

Looking at Erick’s troubled expression as he said that single word, I knew that something wasn’t right.  That he was somehow  searching for the right way to approach the subject.  “What is it?”

But he just looked at the ground, saddnes and apprehension clouding his face.

“Damn it Erick was it?  It can’t be any worse than turning into a monster.” I stated, beginning to fear.

    “I almost lost you.”

“What do you mean you almost lost me?  I’m like you.  Nanos make me strong.” I stated confused.

“You almost died.” Erick stated, looking into my eyes.  Fear clearly shown in his.  “I had to.  I had no choice.”

“You had to what?  Erick your scaring me.  What is it?”

“Your body was rejecting the Nanos.” Erick stated becoming completely still.

    “So?  What did you do?”

“I wasn’t prepared to loose you.  So I gave you a serum.  I serum that freezes the Nanos.” he said deep in thought.  Not looking at me.

“The serum that turns you mortal?  You gave me the serum that turns you mortal?” I asked, pulling his face to face me.  “I don‘t understand.  I …”

“It didn’t work as we expected it would.  It did save your life but not how I wanted.”

    “What do you mean?”

“It froze the Nanos long enough for you to finish turning.  But not enough for us to take the Nanos out.”

    “What are you saying?”

    “You’re a No Fanger.”

“I know.” I said relaxing a bit.  This was what was worrying him?

“You don’t understand.” Erick said taking me by the chin, making me face him.  “The council members don’t approve of the No Fangers.  They are sentence to death on sight.”

    Okay.  That I wasn’t expecting.

Jumping out of the bed, I began to pace the room.  Fear gripping me.  “What do you mean sentence to death?”

“Melanie calm down.” he said trying to follow me.

“Don’t you dare tell me to calm down.  They want to kill me.”

“Listen to me.  I wont let anything happen to you.  Leave the council members to me.” Erick whispered, pulling me into his arms.
