Chapter 9

Sophie yelled out his name over and over, no response. With nothing left to do, she teleported back to Havenfield. As she walked in, the weight of what happened started to hit as the adrenaline slipped away.

Edaline saw her as she walked in, "Sophie! Elwin told me you got a concussion, where were you?" When Sophie didn't respond, Edaline noticed her expression, "Sweetheart, what happened?"

The question hit Sophie hard, it felt like a piece of her heart had been ripped out, "The Neverseen took Keefe."

The statement pushed her overboard, her breathing intensified as she collapsed to the floor. She hugged her knees into her chest and tears leaked down her cheeks. She couldn't process anything going around her as she fell deeper and deeper into despair.

Then she realized something, Keefe? She transmitted, hoping that he would receive it. At first silence. She repeated the call over and over becoming desperate.

When all seemed lost she heard him, Foster? His voice in her mind alleviated some of the stress, but the worry that he was hurt wouldn't disappear.

Where are you?

Not sure but Glimmer and Ruy just walked in. Would you like to look through my eyes, if you can do that with telepathy?

Sophie thought about it for a moment, Never tried, hold on. Her consciousness moved to the front of his mind where he was visualizing and processing things, Okay, I can see what you're seeing.

Ruy and Glimmer stood in the far point of the room and Keefe was tied up. Sophie's heart hurt at the thought.

"This was a horrible idea," Ruy was saying to Glimmer.

"You think I don't know that, but what are we supposed to do now?" 

"Maybe let him go?" Ruy suggested. Sophie could tell they were both angry but there was a sort of connection between them. It seemed as though they didn't actually blame each other and they were just working through the problem.

"You were the one that caught him!" Glimmer accused.

"I was planning on running away, I didn't expect the Moonlark to be able to break down my force field. She wasn't even close to figuring it out at this point!"

"Ruy!" Glimmer yelled, gesturing over to Keefe.

Ruy's eyes widened, "This is why we don't do this with the prisoner present!"

"May I remind you...WE AREN'T SUPPOSED TO HAVE A PRISONER!" Glimmer hit him on the shoulder repeatedly.

"When I was in the Neverseen this was never a problem! We kidnapped whoever we liked."

"Ruy we talked about this, you can't just use when I was in the Neverseen as an excuse for everything. The Neverseen killed people! The bar is pretty low!"

"Ugh," Ruy sighed, "Can we just let him go?"

"We should but..." Glimmer paused, "the Moonlark has to come to pick him up. I have some things I want to say." She turned toward Keefe, "I know you're telling her everything so tell her that she has 24 hours."

Right after she explained where they were she was pulled out of Keefe's mind. "Sophie!" Edaline said, shaking her. She snapped her head up and saw absolutely everyone.

The Collective, the Council, all of her friends, all of their parents, and even Cassius was there. She looked at them and they all exploded in questions. Dumb things that didn't even matter to her. She rolled her eyes, opened a portal below her, and dropped, but a hand grabbed her pulling her away.

Everyone who was previously arguing stopped and turned to Sophie, who was lying on the ground. She looked up and it was Biana who had grabbed her. Glaring, she stands up, "Really?"

Everyone was looking at her with pity in their eyes, Edaline stepped forward, "Sophie, we're worried about you and–"

"Oh really? I couldn't tell over all the arguing and questions and no one caring if I'm okay. Do you know why you didn't check up on me? It's because you never do, and you know who does? Keefe. So how about you keep asking your meaningless questions and I'm going to go save Keefe."

"Ms. Foster, you shouldn't go alone. Take Sandor or one of your friends at least," Mr. Forkle said.

"No," Sophie said sharply. And for the shock factor of it all, she opened a portal under her feet and dropped.

A/N: A lot of these characters behave differently than they do in the books and I honestly don't care. I don't think Ruy and Glimmer would ever act that way to each other but since this is fanfiction I thought it would be interesting if they did.
