A/N: Before we even get into the story let's just appreciate Unraveled coming out. I'm already more than 150 pages in and I got the book yesterday. No spoilers but it's actually amazing!!!! It's for all team Keefe fans out there so probably everyone reading this because I can't imagine not being a fan of Keefe and making it through 24 chapters of this story.
"Darling," A voice whispered into her ear, "Time to wake up."
Sophie ignored him and curled tighter into Keefe, pulling the sheets up over her. He pulled her into a hug, resting his chin on her head.
"Foster, you should probably go back to the Neverseen. Or if you really want you can abandon that thought and stay with me."
Sophie smiled, her mind hazy with sleep. The last thing she wanted to do was get up, "I want to stay with you,"
"Really? Are you sure?" He asked tentatively, "Once you are fully awake we can reevaluate,"
Something pinged in her pocket. Her imparter. She grabbed it from her pocket and basically threw it at Keefe, "Respond for me," and she burrowed back into his chest.
"It's Gethen,"
"Tell him to go away," She whined, wanting peace and quiet.
"I—ugh," Keefe typed something. She heard another ding and Keefe typed something else, and then, silence, "He's giving you an hour,"
Sophie's eyebrows rose, "Really?"
"Kind of, he wants to talk to me though," Keefe said slowly.
She shook her head, "No. No no no no. That's not happening,"
Keefe moved away from her and off of the bed, "You know I love you, but I think this might actually be a good idea. Could you please open a portal for me?"
"No," Sophie said, almost sounding like an insolent child. He stood in silence waiting, "Fine. But why do you want to go?"
He sighed, "I love being the silly irresponsible one in our relationship, but right now I can't. Right now, you need someone that's looking out for you and isn't afraid to tell you no. So, I'm going to talk to Gethen and get a feel for everything that is happening,"
Staring at him she said, "Since when do you act like this?"
"Since you started acting carefree, and I don't want to say it, but reckless. Sophie," Keefe paused waiting for the fact that he had used her real name to set in, "I agreed to this, agreed that I could stand by you if you joined the Neverseen because you wanted to explore who you are. You wanted to know if you could make real change. This laziness is not showing me that.
"I don't want to sound like a disappointed parent, I want you to realize I am your husband, who loves you and wants you to be making good decisions. So, I am going to talk to Gethen so I understand everything, even the things you might not be telling me, so I can look out for your well-being,"
"But I already told you everything," Sophie sat up, becoming angry at Keefe's points. Probably because they were pretty accurate.
"Then you are welcome to come with me," Keefe smiled, although there was a deep look in his eyes.
Sophie grabbed her Neverseen cloak, pulling it on but leaving the hood down. She was about to open the portal when Keefe stopped her, "Wait,"
She sighed, "What now?"
Keefe ran into his closet, rummaging through piles of clothes that Sophie had no idea when they were last washed. He pulled out a cloak, his old Neverseen one, "Now we can match!" His grin lit up the room that had previously felt like an alien planet where Keefe was serious and knocking some sense into her. Sophie ran over to him and hugged him tightly. She couldn't, wouldn't thank him for being the sensible one yet, but she could at least show him she was sorry.
They walked into the Neverseen base together, Sophie's hood was off, but Keefe's was pulled over his head in a way that made his identity impossible to know. She saw people's heads turn as she walked in, but she paid no attention to them. They walked into Gethen's office together and saw him, sitting holding a drink that Sophie could only identify as some sort of alcohol.
"Hello Father," Sophie said with a polite smile.
"Hello, daughter. I can't help but notice you left the base last night, to spend it with your–" he paused to sneer, "husband."
Sophie's gaze turned evil, "No. No, you can disrespect anyone you want, just not him."
Gethen nodded slowly, "Ah, protective, well then I would like to know who is standing next to you and if it is who I think it is."
"Well," Keefe said, slowly pulling off his hood, "You would be correct. Hello Gethen."
"Hello Keefe, or should I say son, well son-in-law technically, but we can skip the formalities can't we?"
Keefe slammed his hands down on the table, "No! I am not here for that, I'm here to know if you've changed. Because I know who you used to be and it was not someone prepared to run this organization."
Gethen smiles, "Oh, I think you will find that I am very prepared. But, as you are not a part of our Neverseen I can't tell you anything."
"Then why did you want to talk to me?" Keefe asked.
"To let you know, that your wife–my daughter is safe in my hands," Gethen grinned.
Keefe glared at him, "She better be, and if she isn't I will slit your throat in your sleep and watch as you choke on your blood. And don't worry about me, I won't feel guilty at all," Keefe pulled his hood on and stormed out.
"That's not all—" Gethen tried to say, but Keefe was to far away, "Ah, it doesn't matter,"
Sophie nodded to Gethen, "I'll be back in a little bit," She quickly turned and ran out to find Keefe. She saw a cloaked form hustling over towards the door, he stopped and walked over to two other figures.
All these cloaks make it so hard to find anyone!
She reached the group of three, and realized the other two were Ruy and Glimmer, "Glimmer, how is your little BlazieBoo doing?"
Ruy growled, "How would you know that?" He turned to look at Sophie, "You told your husband, really? You knew this would happen!"
Sophie shrugged, "Can't help what he decides to do with information,"
Ruy turned to Glimmer, "This is all your fault. Before I had the best reputation here, people were scared of me!"
She smiled sweetly at him, "But you didn't have me...so what's better?"
Ruy rolled his eyes, Sophie laughed, "Ruy, I'm sorry for telling Keefe. I should have seen this coming he's constantly calling me random nicknames,"
Keefe gasped, putting his hand to his chest in mock offense, "I thought you loved that, especially when I use them when we–"
"No! Keefe. Stop," Sophie interrupted, her cheeks heating, "You know what Ruy, I'm with you."
Keefe pouted, "Then I'm with Glimmer!"
Glimmer and Ruy looked at each other for a moment before nodding in agreement, Ruy spoke first, "Yeah, I'm joining someone that respects my real name."
All four of them laughed and Sophie led them to her room where they hung out for the morning until Sophie was called to Gethen's office and Keefe left to go back to Shores of Solace.
A/N: If you understood that joke in one of the last lines...I'm proud of you. It was too good of an opportunity to pass up when I wrote it so I hope everyone that gets it appreciates it. If not, I hope you at least enjoyed the rest of the chapter! Thanks for reading and remember to vote and comment!!!
