Everyone started to bombard Sophie with questions and she couldn't think. She just wanted it to stop, so she started laughing. After a couple of moments, everyone was staring at her.
"You are all," she was broken up by her own fake laughs, "so gullible," she continued laughing. They all seemed to be believing her, "Of course, we're not married. That would be ridiculous, we're just dating!"
A lot of the group breathed a sigh of relief, Fitz still seemed angry, "We just broke up!"
Sophie rolled her eyes, "Oh just shut up. I tried to break it to you nicely, but we wouldn't have worked out. Maybe you can text that chandelier you ran into after you were getting better from the shadow-flux attack, it seemed pretty attached to you."
Fitz stared at her in shock. And Sophie realized what she had just said. She hadn't even thought about it and it had just come out. The anger she normally kept inside had escaped. She realized that the pain was creeping back into her brain.
She grabbed her head, "No. Nonono." She let out a loud keening noise.
Why did it hurt? What is going on?
The thoughts focused her and she tried to focus on the part that hurt the most. She kept crying out in pain while she tried to focus. Her consciousness felt stretched, like she was trying to telepathically communicate but it was going somewhere she didn't know and it was pulling too hard.
"Keefe!" She yelled, he was the only one that could stop the pain. She squeezed her eyes shut and when she opened them he was by her side.
"Numb," he commanded. The pain stopped.
"My consciousness feels like it is stretching and I can't stop it," Sophie told him.
"It could be stretching to the future, maybe the dart caused it. Let me try something," he took a deep breath, and grabbed her hand, "Enhance me please," she switched her enhancing on again, "In. Here. Present. Now."
Each word hit her, deeper and deeper into her mind. When he finished she felt centered, like the world was fully in color again. She hadn't noticed reality slipping away, but everything seemed more vivid now that she was back.
Keefe looked at her hopefully, "Did it work?"
"Yes, I think for now it did," Keefe grinned at her response, he glanced back at everyone else who still had a lot of confused looks on their faces. Sophie sighed, "Okay, everyone here's the quick rundown, Keefe and I are dating, he and I have already talked about getting married and he was really emotional when he said I was his wife and you know Ro, she's always saying crazy things. Fitz, I'm sorry but the reality is we are done. Deal with it how you will,"
She turned to Keefe and he just said, "I have something I want to ask you."
Sophie tilted her head in confusion, Keefe just grinned and dragged her out of the room and over to the leap masters.
After a flash of light, they were in Havenfield. Sophie opened her mouth to ask what was going on, but Keefe just put his finger on her lips, shushing her softly. She smiled at his determined expression to not tell her anything. "Stay here," Keefe ran into the house, and in a couple of minutes, he came back. He grabbed her hand and dragged her through the pastures into the forest where the gnomes lived, and into the meadow where Sophie confessed her feelings for him.
When they were there Keefe finally spoke, "This is where we officially started, this is when we kissed and realized we would never want anyone else. And we are married which reinforces that, but it isn't reinforced now. While I think we should keep the future thing under wraps because it could be disastrous if the Neverseen found out, I do want to show that commitment here. So..." Keefe reached into his pocket and knelt down on one knee, Sophie gasped, "I asked Grady for his permission earlier in the hall and he agreed. He also told me where a ring that he had wanted to give Brant for Jolie was in his house and told me to use it. So, although this isn't as fancy as my last proposal..." Sophie laughed at the memory, "Will you marry me? Again?"
Sophie held out her left hand, "Depends, how pretty is the ring?"
"Not as beautiful as you," Keefe said, then gagged, "Wow, that sounded better in my head, if you want to decline my offer I would understand."
She laughed, "You're cute, I'll let it slide. So, yes, yes I'll marry you!"
Keefe smiled and slid the ring on her finger. Sophie pulled her hand up to her face, "Oooo, pretty."
Keefe smirked, "So what do you want to do, look at a rock or kiss me?"
"Do you even have to ask?" Sophie pulled him to his feet, grabbed his hair, and pulled him in to kiss her.
He smiled against her lips and pushed her against a tree. She gasped in surprise, and Keefe deepened the kiss. Sophie closed her eyes and let out a contented sigh. The time travel might have complicated everything, but it was never complicated between her and Keefe.
