"First you kiss her and now she's asleep on your chest!" Sophie awoke to Grady yelling. She opened her eyes slowly, trying to figure out what was going on.
Keefe's arm was wrapped around her and she was leaning against him. She turned to face Grady, who was red-faced and fuming.
"Dad, what are you–" Sophie started to ask, pulling herself up to a full sitting position.
"And you! I never agreed to you dating let alone That Boy! What do you think you're doing?" Grady's stare made Sophie want to start crying and plead for forgiveness.
"You were okay with me dating Fitz! How is this different?"
Grady threw his hands into the air, "It just is!"
Sophie tilted her head to the side, "Can you explain that?"
Grady groaned exasperated. Sophie stared at him, not breaking eye contact until he broke, "Fine. Sophie, to be honest, you and Fitz were never going to last, so I wasn't worried. I knew you would probably break up with him and I wouldn't have to worry."
Sophie smiled slightly, seeing the things he wasn't saying, "So what does that mean about Keefe?"
Sighing, he answered, "Ever since I saw you interact with each other I knew you were going to fall in love with him. He was clearly in love with you,"
Sophie glanced over at Keefe with a grin who looked at her and rolled his eyes, and whispered, "You are never letting that go, are you?"
She shook her head, "Nope!"
Grady sighed again, "Case in point. Once you two realized this I knew you would never break up, and now my fear is a reality," Sophie opened her mouth to protest, Grady stopped her "But! As much as this angers me I also know that Keefe would never hurt you and do anything for you."
Keefe wrapped his arm around Sophie, "I would die for her,"
Grady nodded, "But you will also live for her. You won't succumb to any hardship because you know that she needs you. You won't ever stop fighting because of her. That's something that is hard to find, especially when I know your life has made things hard to persevere."
Sophie stared at Grady in silence and shock. She couldn't believe that he was seeing the good in Keefe and the unvoiced reasons she loved him.
"Thank you," Sophie said, "For respecting my choices, and not beating up Keefe."
Grady was about to respond when there was a knock at the door. Grady got up and opened the door, Mr. Forkle walked in. Once Grady had left the room, Mr. Forkle spoke, "We have a problem."
Sophie's eyes widened, "What happened?"
"Wylie and Maruca have been kidnapped." Mr. Forkle said, his voice grave.
"What! Why?"
"We can't figure it out, there doesn't seem to be any reason. The Neverseen took Tam because he has powers that they needed, but they don't need a flasher or a psionipath..." He paused, Sophie realized where his mind went immediately.
"They don't have Ruy or Glimmer anymore," Sophie gasped. She stepped backward in shock, "This is all my fault. I just wanted to get us home," She mumbled.
Keefe pulled her into his arms, "They said they were going to leave anyway, it's not your fault. It's not. Don't let the guilt in,"
"We need to reset everything soon, before people get hurt," Sophie said. Keefe nodded.
Mr. Forkle interrupted them, "You two need to tell me what you're hiding. And I know you are hiding something, especially because I can't get into your mind."
"Forklenator seriously, didn't you create Foster here to be mysterious and overpowered. Don't get mad at her for your own mistakes," Keefe said smirking when Mr. Forkle frowned, "Ahhhhh, and it was at that moment he knew he—"
"Keefe!" Sophie yelled, smacking him, "Language!"
He raised his hands in defense and responded, "I understood that reference."
Sophie rolled her eyes, "And I understood that reference," She sighed, "I never should have shown you Marvel,"
(Who else loves Marvel??!?!?!?!)
"Can we get back on track here," Mr. Forkle said tiredly.
"Yes, of course, sorry," Sophie turned back to face Mr. Forkle, "What's our plan to get them back?"
Mr. Forkle sighed, "We don't have one yet. We need to call the rest of the team and come up with a plan, maybe trade Ruy and the flasher."
Sophie took a sharp intake of air, "Well, yeah, there might be a problem with that. We don't exactly have them any more."
Mr. Forkle looked furious, something she had never seen before. He was normally calm and quiet, but apparently Sophie's actions were adding up and she was really in for a yelling now, "Sophie Elizabeth Foster, we are going to have a talk. It will not be pleasant. Mr. Sencen, please leave, you will not want to be here for this."
Keefe's expression turned stormy. Sophie had learned over the years that Keefe was extremely protective of her. Not to the point that it was excessive, but to the point that he was always there for her and would always stand up for her or back her up. And Mr. Forkle had basically just said he was going to yell at her, so he did not look like he was happy about that. He walked to the door, but didn't leave. He stood there quietly.
Mr. Forkle seemed too angry at Sophie to notice him not leaving, "You keep acting like you're better than everyone, more powerful than everyone–"
"I am more powerful," Sophie interrupted, but Mr. Forkle glared at her and continued.
"You are more powerful, but you aren't better than everyone, and you aren't allowed to keep acting like this. You keep ditching the team, hiding information, and acting like you don't need anyone," Sophie opened her mouth to fight it but she didn't get far, "Keefe doesn't count, he isn't exactly known for his good opinions,"
Sophie was growing angrier by the second, but a glance over at Keefe made her calm down. She didn't have to be mad on his behalf this time, because she knew he wasn't mad. She and him had talked about his impulsive decisions and Keefe was getting better at not making them.
Mr Forkle continued on his rampage, "And now this, you just let some prisoners go because you felt like it."
"I WAS THE ONE THAT GOT THEM, I CAN LET THEM GO!" Sophie yelled.
"YOU DO NOT GET TO SPEAK! You are going to sit and listen and then you are going to do what I say and you are going to like it. I don't care about whatever reasons you have for these actions, they aren't enough. So shut up, sit down, and listen!"
Sophie, shocked, sat down in silence. Mr. Forkle opened his mouth to speak, but this time Keefe interrupted him.
"No, no she will not do that!" Mr. Forkle turned to him, shocked he was still there.
"And why do you get to decide what she will do?" Mr. Forkle said, outraged that someone was disrespecting him.
Keefe sighed, and instead of exploding in anger, something Sophie almost expected from her experiences with Fitz recently, he took a deep breath and spoke, "I don't, but you don't either. Foster is stronger than you give her credit for, constantly questioning why she's getting better and not congratulating her. Be proud of her, empower her to save Wylie and Maruca like she was made to do." And with that Keefe walked out.
A/N: This chapter was pretty hard to write, I'm not sure why but it was. I hope everyone liked it even though it's not my favorite chapter. Thanks for reading, remember to vote and comment!!! <33333
